Chemgal sends in this reminder that there might be a few syndromes not in DSM-5.

Thanks to John Reubens, who says “Thought this was clever. Made me LOL. 1880s version of unfriending? 🙂 “

Ran into this Liz Climo on Facebook; it doesn’t seem to be on GoComics, nor on her own site.

This is the funniest comic I’ve ever seen that seems reminiscent of the quadratic formula, although it doesn’t get the coefficients and exponents quite right.

Sender Dana K and I were in minor disagreement over whether the word-play element here is pun-like enough to count as an OY. “Neg/Q Scope Ambiguity” is certainly there potentially in the 3rd panel; but it’s not clearly intentional, and even less the point of the gag.

Here’s a nice LOL-Eww from Boise Ed:

This Moderately Confused sent in by Rob is in what we might dub the “foibles funnies” genre:

Out of season

Two funny bits that seem like they might belong more to winter publication. The Kliban of course is a reprint from ages ago, so that makes sense. And the Liz Climo is funny any time. Also noticed by Andréa and used in a comment!

Merry Christmas!

[2021-12-25 Repost + additions]

Reposting our message from last year, with new cartoons added in the body of the post (below last year’s — look for the animated dividers) , and last year’s comments preserved, and open for new comments!

Happy Christmas wishes!

To all who celebrate the holiday, whether as mostly religious or mostly civic

Merry Christmas, if you’re celebrating!

Is it exciting as an adult to get socks? Sure, they’re useful, but they hardly seem exciting. Is this because I’m a guy, and not attuned to the exciting world of sock fashion?

Is replacing bad bulbs still a thing? Is a tedious search to find the bad bulb still a thing? Were they in 2010? I thought the era where bulbs were connected in a permanent series, so that one bad bulb killed the whole chain was long, long, gone.

Do people still say “shopping days until Christmas”? It seems a bit odd – they’re all shopping days now, right?

Not a CIDU. Just a reminder that you can’t always trust Santa.

[2021-12-25 supplement]

Wait, I know this is seasonal, but is it technically a New Year carol more than Christmas?

Thanks to BillR for this one:

And sort of a combo of the previous two:

Here’s a FoxTrot from 2019, sent in by Berber, who says “I don’t recall seeing very many Foxtrot comics, although Bill Amend loves an Oy as much as the next artist.”

This Curtis is in the Awww basket.

Rob sends in a pair of Falcos on tree behavior!

Liz Climo is always a source for raising positive thinking! Rob suggested one, the other suggested itself! (Via Arnold Zwicky’s blog.)

[Each Climo cartoon has two panels, aligned vertically, with a box around the top one. I hope you don’t have trouble seeing the two instances here.]

And this Loose Parts also is from Rob:

And thanks to Brian Leahy for this real OY! scanned in, which he suggests (and we agree) is probably by Gary McCoy.

Can anybody reconstruct the story-pun about “Rudolf The Red knows rain, dear!” ? Official meteorologist to the First Soviet maybe?

(And let’s just not label this one…)

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, August 22nd, 2021

(This was actually part of a linked series, but seeing the preceding strips wouldn’t make much difference, apart from explaining what might otherwise be a mysterious detail — she was hit in the head by a flying baseball, and is holding an ice bag to it for pain relief.)

And a second shot for Pardon My Planet. This one is a LOL-CIDU. It did take a couple minutes before we got it – but not hard enough to justify making it a separate CIDU post. Also (I confess) it shows the perils of holding on to a negative attitude about some comic strip — one reason I didn’t get it at first was dismissing some meaningful details as merely haphazard artwork.

LOL-synchro from an unlikely pair!

And a last minute Sunday Bizarro LOL.

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, August 1st, 2021

Sent by Boise Ed as “Just flat-out funny, to me at least.” He also shares some info about the strip: “Andy Marlette is an editorial cartoonist in Florida who just started Shrimp and Grits this past Memorial Day. His uncle Doug was a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and also wrote the Kudzu comic strip.”

LOL and only slightly Eww!

And what th’ heck, let’s indulge with another Liz Climo using the same idea of two species treating something according to their differing natural perspectives:

A LOL-Eww from Bob Ball, who adds: “At least she’s fully clothed in the comic.”

More on the Sad-LOL bandwagon!

Trying for diversity in the writers room.

And from the The Cartoonist knows more than the Character Department:

And circling back to where we began, another Mannequin:

This time Junk Drawer is about a junk drawer!

BUT that doesn’t mean only the namesake can discuss the junk drawer!

Okay, okay, not really a LOL. And certainly not an Ewwww. Just more like …. an Awwww?

Bliss and Martin do a nice job with the last-second twist:

From Dave Berg, who sent it in as CIDU. There is potentially a fairly direct explanation, however (reserved for now — we’ll see if you’all agree). But it still leaves this a good, ironic, chuckle.

A Meta from Working Daze:

And a LOL-Eww as a fitting end:
