Caffeine Redux

Some comics feature both tea and coffee, usually preferring the latter, but this comic from a 1902 issue of “Punch” is notable for its impartiality:

The passenger’s statement (“Look here, Steward, if this is Coffee, I want Tea; but if this is Tea, then I wish for Coffee”) has been (incorrectly) attributed to a number of people (such as Abraham Lincoln), but it remains unclear who said it first, or whether it was merely composed as a fictional anecdote.

Herman is confronted with an alternative solution:

Buni seems to depict the usual attitude of coffee drinkers towards tea.

Ditto Adam@Home:

Horace has made it clear (multiple times) that he definitely prefers coffee:

It’s hard to say which one it easier to prepare (if you care about doing it well):

Sometimes it doesn’t matter, when it’s just for the caffeine:

Each drink has its own particular traditions.

It’s that time of year again…

… and the less said about it, the better.

Finally, one bastion of sanity in a lunatic world:

P.S. All of the previous appearances of Pumpkin Spice at CIDU were posted by Bill in the Fall of 2019; three of these presented some fairly hideous pumpkin spice flavored products (some real, some fictitious); click on the link if you are interested in seeing them. (Please note that the whole “pumpkin spice” collection will be presented in reverse chronological order, so you will have to scroll down past this one to get to Bill’s “spicy” material.)

P.P.S.Edit: both links have been corrected, thanks to deety!

Saturday Morning OYs – September 2nd, 2023

And another one for official Frankenstein Day:

And one directly addressing the occasion:

This from Chemgal, spotting an OY not in the comic overall but in a particular panel.

That’s right, it’s in what Chemgal calls “the third last panel”. I was going to have a fine old time on how different people, not to mention different nations, have different ways of counting from the back of a series, so the only safe way to label a “third from the end” or “second one from the last” or “position negative 3” is to adopt the technical-looking but easy-enough and safely unambiguous ANTEPENULTIMATE.

Oh but then! — but then I took a closer look, and I think the drawing is misleading, and actually the last panel includes both Adam’s speech balloon “Seriously .. all that?” as well as Katy’s and Clayton’s jibes. So the one with the cute shark tray pun is “second last” … or do you say “next to last”? Or “second back from the end”? Or “first before the last one”? Let’s go with PENULTIMATE!

“We prefer the British spelling diarrhoea as it shows a loss of control of your vowels.”

Obligatory topic

Okay, it’s Resolutions…

“This year we’ll turn it around” counts as a resolution in my book!

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, July 17th, 2022

A little bit mean … but still quite funny.

A brain-painful LOL from Chemgal:

Inspiration!

This almost went into the Oys list, since there is a play on a sort of ambiguity of where. This was a favorite joke-form of a friend of mine who knew Ulysses inside-out after teaching it to undergrads at Millard Fillmore College in Buffalo, and dubbed these “on the canal bank” jokes. It was from this bit, in the final chapter:
I hate that confession when I used to go to Father Corrigan he touched me father and what harm if he did where and I said on the canal bank like a fool but whereabouts on your person my child on the leg behind high up was it yes rather high up was it where you sit down yes O Lord couldnt he say bottom right out and have done with it what has that got to do with it and did you whatever way he put it I forget no father

Okay, is it missing a beat, or brilliantly leaving unsaid, that Martin changes his mind because the patron reveals he is preparing to use highlighter or underline if he doesn’t have Post-Its?

Thanks to Boise Ed for sending this in and noting how it does “clever damage to the fourth wall”.

And a nice plus here is that Percy was not brought in just for this meta moment, but in following days has some entirely non-meta joke conversations with Clayton.
