Do the mash

I felt sure CIDU had somewhere printed this Bizarro:

But apparently not. It must have felt familiar because I had seen it the previous week in several places already (email, CK, Wayno’s blog, Piraro’s blog, …). But apparently not right here on these pages.

Why was I looking for it? So that I might drop into a comment on whatever post or thread the Bizarro appeared in, this 1991 Far Side, featuring the same deadly weapon, appearing just recently on the current Far Side archive site.

Repetitive asynchronicity

I don’t mind an occasional re-run, but it gets a little more interesting when an artist decides to re-draw a strip.

Here’s the Non-Sequitur from Valentine’s Day, 2023:

It seemed awfully familiar, and I soon discovered that Wiley had already done a strip with exactly the same joke (1-Nov-2019):

(This time on All Saints’ Day, which doesn’t seem quite as appropriate.)

The really weird thing is that Wiley had already done exactly the same strip (but in monochrome) a full twenty years before (26-Jan-1999):

Either Wiley is completely forgetting his own archive, or he is being unusually careful about getting this joke “perfect”.

I can’t believe it’s not a synchronicity!

From Andréa, who points out for the synchronicity inspectors that although the Knight Life is a rerun or classic, its appearance on GoComics was 2022/11/08, same as the Candorville. The Candorville is a pretty good LOL at the end, too, despite edging up kinda near to partisan politics.

(Post-posting edit: As noted in comments, the following was the intended Knight Life, which actually uses the phrase “I can’t believe”.)

And for some additional fun on the “Can’t believe it” topic, Andréa also sends a link for this scene from The Vicar of Dibley. Impressive memory and facility from Emma Chambers, playing Alice.

Saturday Morning OYs – October 22nd, 2022

Andréa sends in this synchronicity / Ewww. Kids and bidets. Never thought of them as such a big source of comic material. Marvin even spends a whole week on bidet gags, making you wonder a bit about what’s going on in Tom Armstrong’s life.

Flutter-byes

Previously (in https://cidu.info/2022/05/16/never-wear-around-your-neck-anything-that-comes-out-of-your-tail-end/ ) we explored the precedence of flutter-by before butterfly — to the surprise of many, including me.

Recently Andréa noticed: “BTW – I don’t know if it’s because of Monarch Butterfly Migration Season, or what, but have YOU noticed a plethora of caterpillar-to-butterfly jokes? I think I’ve seen 15-20 in the past week.”

Then almost immediately after seeing her mail, I ran across this from David Borchart in “Bob Mankoff presents: show me the funny (animal edition)” at Comics Kingdom:

Further … we went looking for more, and Andréa took a look for the ones she had encountered. And we all realized it had not been a widespread phenomenon from multiple sources, but an obviously conscious and intended series from the (don’t hold your breath for the duration of this title) “Bob Mankoff Presents: Show Me The Funny (Animal Edition)” people.

Nonetheless, no reason not to share their accomplishments with the CIDU crowd!

(Recovered suggestion box item) The famous team of Siri and Alexa

In January of 2018 CIDU Bill implemented a Contact form page*, and during February 2018 a few readers used that form to send in their suggestions for cartoons to run and analyze on CIDU. We recently stumbled on that cache, and will be running three.

Thanks to Bill Kiraly for this near-synchronicity, which he calls “Great synchronicity for Feb 1 Non Sequitur and Jan 30 Speed Bump”.
