Saturday Morning Oys – April 23rd, 2022

Thanks to Andréa for this subtle groaner:

And another from Andréa:

Sources say that either the exclamation “Great Scott” is not attached to any particular person with that name; or else may be associated with Sir Walter Scott, or with U.S. General Winfield Scott. But here, with the talk of Antarctica and the South Pole, surely they intend some kind of glance at famous and unfortunate polar explorer Robert F Scott?

And another from Andréa, who calls this “Barely an oy”. Also fodder for you dialectologists out there.

Saturday Morning Oys – April 16th, 2022

I did literally LOL! But filing it with the OYs for the word play.

Okay, the oldest phonetic exchange on the books; but they do something new with it.
Now the rainman gave me two cures
Then he said, “Jump right in”
The one was Texas medicine
The other was just railroad gin
An’ like a fool I mixed them
An’ it strangled up my mind
An’ now people just get uglier
An’ I have no sense of time

Writing prompt: That’s a *winch*. Why is that a better pun than a *wrench* would have been?

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, April 10th, 2022

Oh oh oh, I’ve found it!

“Here’s an apocryphal story that I figure prominently in.”
A CIDUer received this in some email without source info, and passed it along. The artist seems to be Mike Gruhn, who posts cartoons to Instagram and here-and-there; and has his own site, called WebDonuts.  He had a feature called Caption Challenge or Caption Contest, which seems to end in 2015. A note on the WebDonuts site from 2019 indicates  that Instagram would be the place to look for his current material.

The mirror is sketched oddly and had me thinking for a second it was a cleaver! But thankfully, no!

CIDU Bill had saved this one to an unused draft dated 2019/08/17 and called “Strange Family”, as a CIDU:

This Far Side link for the snake crossing cartoon is not going to last very long.

Thanks to Kilby for sending this one, and saying “This is the best 4th-wall joke I’ve seen in quite a while:”

Paranoia strikes deep / Into your life it will creep

The great thing about this is that we understand a couple of important points about how those paintings were made.

Saturday Morning Oys – April 2nd, 2022

My attempt to look up whether the first two panels have the accurate tartans for those clans was hampered by starting from a position of zero knowledge, and by what turned out to be a huge set of variants for any name. However, most samples of Sinclair Modern seem to have a lot more red than in the comic. Shrug. Anyway, the pun is in panel 3, and is pretty good.

It’s not uncommon for these two guys to end a conversation with that mutual exchange of “What?”. And actually I’m generally quite content with that and wouldn’t demand more punchline delivery.

When I first heard about a State of the Union speech I figured it must be to announce an award, and wondered if Florida had a chance.
