Probably just cartoon physics

It doesn’t seem like that axe would fit in that crate, does it? The stump and basket, maybe–though after UPS rolls it around the back of the truck several times, I doubt the basket would be in that good condition.

ObAnecdote: I have nothing against UPS, but I worked with a woman who hated them with a passion, and with justification: they lost her bridesmaids’ dresses. All of them. Forever. Never reappeared. I’d hear her in the next cubicle calling a company and trying to find some OTHER way of shipping their item, and cancelling the order if they had no choices except UPS. Still makes me laugh.

P.S. Yes, this post is late. Y’all are all entitled to a full refund of your CIDU membership fees.

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, September 24th, 2023

A sad-LOL.

This might be a Semi-CIDU, as there is the question of whether this is how the cowboy bathes (and gets the horse to manage the timing and coins), or it’s at the horse’s volition as it wants its gear and rider to be clean.

The “when I look” and “someone will sneak” look like ordinary indicatives, with something like habitual aspect. But surely this doesn’t happen a lot! If we take into account the strip title, that makes this binocular-knocking one of those fears — we just have to understand a “One of my fears is that when ..” at the start and it all comes together.

The Devil’s

targuman sent:

noting, “I know the phrase ‘Idle hands make the Devil’s workshop’ (or similarly ‘Idle hands make for the Devil’s work’) but I don’t see the Devil working here…just hopping. I get that the idea is sort of like a kid leaving Legos on the floor, but it just doesn’t quite connect for me.”

We have a guess as to the intended story/joke here, but figured we’d let the assembled braintrust have at it.

Saturday Morning OYs – June 3rd, 2023

It seems Diamond Lil concentrates on OY punchlines almost every day; so it would be a danger to keep too often considering them for our weekly OY collections. Still, every once in a while, maybe for no particular reason, one of them will jump out and say “Use me!”.

Saturday Morning OYs – May 27th, 2023

If you’re thinking “Didn’t we just see this same joke?” you may be remembering this Life On Earth we posted recently. (Hey, that was in Sunday Funnies – LOLs, May 7th, 2023 . How come the Farcus today goes in the OYs?)

Found on Facebook without good information. We’ve tagged for “Frank Svoboda” based on the (c) line; but searching that name finds someone who was a collector / dealer / agent but doesn’t say he was also a creator, and those roles could fit with copyright holder. So maybe the writing on the side of the bar is the signature? It seems to say “Phranque” and while there is a band with that name I didn’t find any cartoonists or illustrators. And maybe that brings us back around to Frank S, who could have liked stylizing his first name.

Discussion among Maggie and the editors suggested that there are several informations perhaps not immediately known to all readers, which are useful to unpacking the multiple jokes/OYs here. So something of a semi-CIDU.

Firsts

This is the “Semi-CIDU” marked for this post. It’s Cynthia’s friend who says “Lots of firsts that day” but mostly it was Cynthia herself experiencing those firsts.

BTW, what do you think of the drawing techniques used to show us the girls are their younger selves in the last two panels?

[This was a Friday strip. The Saturday strip that follows continues the flashback, and gives an explicit answer to the Semi-CIDU question we posed; so we’re withholding that one until people have had a chance to comment on this post, and then will put it in comments.]
