Sunday Funnies – LOLs, May 12th, 2024

For Mothers Day, a bit of both-parental sentiment from Bliss:

Probably obvious, but for the record, it is Susan (the character shown) herself who is trying to give up caffeine.

The Hax advice column this accompanies is here.

TBH, I don’t entirely understand this. I mean, I understand the heartwarming message about group loyalty and generosity — but not whether there was actually supposed to be anything funny.

Wait, could this be heading for an idiom-origins story about “bought the farm”? No? Nah!

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, March 10th, 2024

Okay, do you agree this belongs in the LOLs? Or would you put it in OY, because the patient’s mishearing error depended on a near-miss similarity of sound between urine and hearing?

Thanks to Chak for this LOL from the Chuckle Bros:

When the New Yorker website has an outage, you see this message.

Hey, just a minute there! Are you saying there’s something wrong with that? It strikes me as an eminently reasonable basis for a preference.

Here is a sampler from recent episodes of an Australian strip that is new on our radar, Insanity Streak by Tony Lopes.

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, December 17th, 2023

A Sad-LOL for sure!

Or is this maybe a Semi-CIDU for anybody?

McDonald’s decides to open one test site for a new concept, CosMc’s, to overmuch social media hype, and now a tip of the hat from Greg Cravens. In the current iteration, it’s drive-thru only, with no restrooms.

The “5-31” in the panel is easy enough, but I’m having a hard time making out the year in the (c) strip. Scrolling in the Comics Kingdom archive to the previous few strips, I think it could be 1967.

Which is maybe late enough that she might have turned out to be the surgeon rather than the nurse. (Certainly by that year the joke/riddle of “A father and his son were out for a Sunday drive” was already quite popular.) Or no, how could a surgeon go out with an enlisted man?

[Does anybody need the rest of the story??]

Veterans Day / Armistice Day add-ons

[Note from 2023 reposting] No comics added as of this reposting. Comments from 2021 and subsequently are preserved. If the note and link at the bottom are a bit confusing, they lead back to a separate posting which was a different version of the Veterans Day Add-ons idea, and is still available in the archive and by that link, but is not herewith being reposted.

[Note from 2021 original posting] Cartoons with Veterans relevance that we recently ran across, or that CIDU Bill had saved to the site’s media library with a note for possible Veterans Day add-on use.

This one Bill marked “Nov 11 Veterans Day addon”. It was posted in https://cidu.info/2020/11/11/one-more-for-veterans-day/

This one Bill marked “UDIC Frazz Veterans Day” . It was posted as https://cidu.info/2018/11/09/udic/

These two we noticed on sequential days in Maria’s Day. Since that strip is on a reruns cycle at GoComics, the actual dates of the recent appearance were 31 August and 01 September, but apparently the original publication was on 10 and 11 November of some year.

There are more good ones that readers added in various years as comments to the original “Arlo’s Veterans Day” post (reposted earlier this morning). But here are others which got posted in various one-off’s at various times.

A very retro Beetle Bailey with a foreshadowing of Vietnam:

Camp Swampy may not ever have been a fighting base, but as this shows, they were not entirely outside a world where military conflict was a reality. And we can count all who served as veterans, whether or not they were in active combat or even in a war zone.

This strip seems to be dated 1964, and early enough in that year that “Viet Nam” did not yet mean all of what it would soon take on. Still, isn’t it a bit shocking that this might strike some of its audience as simply funny?

Interesting reader comments can be found attached to the 2020 posting of this.

Saturday Morning OYs – May 27th, 2023

[Farcus for 22-May-2023 removed by WordPress.]

If you’re thinking “Didn’t we just see this same joke?” you may be remembering this Life On Earth we posted recently. (Hey, that was in Sunday Funnies – LOLs, May 7th, 2023 . How come the Farcus today goes in the OYs?)

Found on Facebook without good information. We’ve tagged for “Frank Svoboda” based on the (c) line; but searching that name finds someone who was a collector / dealer / agent but doesn’t say he was also a creator, and those roles could fit with copyright holder. So maybe the writing on the side of the bar is the signature? It seems to say “Phranque” and while there is a band with that name I didn’t find any cartoonists or illustrators. And maybe that brings us back around to Frank S, who could have liked stylizing his first name.

A suggestion from Maggiethecartoonist:

Discussion among Maggie and the editors suggested that there are several informations perhaps not immediately known to all readers, which are useful to unpacking the multiple jokes/OYs here. So something of a semi-CIDU.

Saturday Morning OYs – September 10th, 2022

Several OYs from Andréa who says “Today must be Pun Day, rather than Labor Day . . . altho some of these puns could be considered quite labored . . .”.

Pedants / experts, have at it!

And another batch stamped “From Andréa” :

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, March 13th, 2022

Well, there’s a good OY on the left, and a good LOL on the right, and I’m feeling too lazy to get out the cropper, so let’s print it twice, once today, and once yesterday or tomorrow.

Not a huge LOL, but Tiger and Punkinhead here are reproducing a classic problem in the literature of logical representation, going back to Bertrand Russell.

An Arlo-LOL from Divad who says “I’ve got a pretty good guess what was on Arlo’s mind (in general), but I’m trying to not picture what he’s specifically thinking.”

“Zzz-mailing” makes it worth it…

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, February 6th, 2022

Republishing this post, so that the site front page will have some comics, instead of the discussions of the domain name difficulties. But an update on those has been posted to

A link to Far Side “Woodsman and beavers” . This link is not expected to remain good for more than a couple weeks.
