[Note from 2023 reposting] No comics added as of this reposting. Comments from 2021 and subsequently are preserved. If the note and link at the bottom are a bit confusing, they lead back to a separate posting which was a different version of the Veterans Day Add-ons idea, and is still available in the archive and by that link, but is not herewith being reposted.
[Note from 2021 original posting] Cartoons with Veterans relevance that we recently ran across, or that CIDU Bill had saved to the site’s media library with a note for possible Veterans Day add-on use.
This one Bill marked “Nov 11 Veterans Day addon”. It was posted in https://cidu.info/2020/11/11/one-more-for-veterans-day/

This one Bill marked “UDIC Frazz Veterans Day” . It was posted as https://cidu.info/2018/11/09/udic/

These two we noticed on sequential days in Maria’s Day. Since that strip is on a reruns cycle at GoComics, the actual dates of the recent appearance were 31 August and 01 September, but apparently the original publication was on 10 and 11 November of some year.

There are more good ones that readers added in various years as comments to the original “Arlo’s Veterans Day” post (reposted earlier this morning). But here are others which got posted in various one-off’s at various times.
A very retro Beetle Bailey with a foreshadowing of Vietnam:

Camp Swampy may not ever have been a fighting base, but as this shows, they were not entirely outside a world where military conflict was a reality. And we can count all who served as veterans, whether or not they were in active combat or even in a war zone.
This strip seems to be dated 1964, and early enough in that year that “Viet Nam” did not yet mean all of what it would soon take on. Still, isn’t it a bit shocking that this might strike some of its audience as simply funny?
Interesting reader comments can be found attached to the 2020 posting of this.
I know I saw in the last day or so at least two other cartoons based around taking “vets” to mean “veterinarians” and suggesting that people who take good care of animals deserve a Day. I thought Mutts must have been one of them, but no, can’t find it in Mutts.

@MikeP thanks for the comment. At first I didn’t know which comic you meant; but then it is clear it’s the bottom one from the Maria’s Day pair. And probably you’re right — Americans now use a different name for this day but do know and sometimes retain the Armistice Day (and Day of Remembrance) traditions.
P.S. If you’re wondering why your comments were held for approval, it wasn’t because of any problem with the content nor the actual email address, just that the system hadn’t seen those addresses before, and both times therefore took you for a first-time commenter.

I think so, and the adult in the panel seems to be carrying one. I imagine the veteran was selling them. Poppies are still a relatively big thing in Canada for their equivalent, Remembrance Day. It got hockey broadcasting curmudgeon Don Cherry finally fired when he complained on air about immigrants not buying poppies.

Last time I saw a veteran selling poppies for Veterans’ Day I was alone as Robert was still working – so about 14/15 years ago or a year or so before.
For some reason, this year in particular Veteran’s Day seems to be treated more as Memorial Day as mostly deceased Veterans being mentioned and talked about. While of course they were Veterans also when alive, this holiday is more for those who are still with us, with Memorial Day being for those have who died .
(Had to stop catching up on the site early last night as we had to take my 93 yo mom to a doctor early today, so I am back to finish.)

@ deety (1) – I found a pair of veteran/veterinarian strips at GoComics, but nothing even remotely recent. It doesn’t sound like something that McDonnell would do in Mutts, but you may also be reading other King Features strips that I do not follow. I’ve never had any luck searching for material in the Comics Kingdom archive, it’s just not worth the effort. That said, one strip was Drabble (11-Nov-2009):

P.S. The second strip was even older (Grand Avenue, 11-Nov-2006):

@Kilby #7 – – I was doubly puzzled by your response, since I did make a comment yesterday, though your response didn’t seem to be connected to it really. And furthermore, I can’t find my comment here anymore!
Well it turns out, I was commenting yesterday in the other Veterans Day thread. And your comment here was in response to my comment in this-here thread, which I posted two years ago! ✌️
(But thanks for those additional examples!)

Thanks, LazJ, those would be pointing to comicsidontunderstand dot com, the domain that we lost and has been used for that gambling site. Sorry about forgetting to update the links on this resurfaced post, we will work on it right off!
