Sunday Funnies – LOLs, November 10th, 2024

Kilby suggested this Macanudo from 2022:

P.S. Perhaps they should join the sheep in that tree just above the strip.

For those unfamiliar with “What the Duck“, the artwork shows a sad duck with its head on the keyboard:

P.P.S. The Ctrl-S key (for “save“) is in fact adjacent to Ctrl-Z (“undo“).

A sweet little fourth-wall moment with Arlo & Janis:

As Mark H. commented when he sent it in: “It IS hard to tell they are dancing without the notes.

Las Vegas Chasm tried to submit an Argyle Sweater as a CIDU, commenting: “I usually “get” Argyle Sweater each day owing to my modestly demented mind, but today’s is a real stumper. My equally perverse friends also do not understand it. Simply put, yo soy confusado.

Unfortunately, LVC’s link to the image was broken. Going by the date, it should have been the one on the right, but that seems too easy, so I’m also including the previous day, which seems equally funny, but might have been a little more puzzling:

The “featured comment” at GoComics gives an explanation for the first one: “Well, if you make corn oil out of corn, and olive oil out of olives, guess what you make baby powder out of” (she tried tasting it).

Considering the logo and the claims linking baby powder to cancer, eating that stuff is definitely not a good idea.

Where do they keep the journals at a Chemistry library? On the periodical table.

Danny Boy sends this high-voltage LOL in.

Saturday Morning OYs – November 09th, 2024

BVCC submitted this Argyle Sweater as the “mother of all Arlo Awards” but it seems closer to OY, especially considering the guest star in the final panel:

P.S. BVCC said that he “almost missed [the Arlo] myself“, but it’s unclear what he meant: perhaps the terms “boob” and/or “tit(t)y“, but they don’t really seem to be credibly “Arlo” (not “titillating” enough).

Maggie the Cartoonist suggested this Rubes as an OY (it might be a repeat):

Thanks to Danny Boy for sending this in. Or should it be “Muffins” is Sniff’um spelled backwards?

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, November 03rd, 2024

Boise Ed submitted this one last year, commenting “Every now and then, Pardon My Planet comes up with a real zinger.” I think I’ve seen it before, but I can’t find it in a CIDU post, and in any case it’s worth repeating:

The not-quite-complete “Arlo” moment in this “Zits” came as a big surprise. Perhaps King Features relaxed their censorship standards when they relaunched the Comics Kingdom website?

P.S. And what if Jeremy’s mom had not left it out? What then?

Two half Arlos published on exactly the same day do not count as a whole synchronicity, but this Luann was pretty good, too:

P.S. Note the annoying, but otherwise irrelevant color error in the second panel.

Boise Ed said about this Argyle Sweater: “Perhaps this is the fifth wall, since he’s erasing four“:

Another meta Macanudo:

P.S. The title panel bears a fair resemblance to “In the Court of the Crimson King“, but it’s unlikely that it was intentional:

Danny Boy sends this in as a CIDU, but rather than post it long after Halloween we’re putting it here. “What, what? “I was making rather scary yesterday.” Is that something like “making merry”? I.e. celebrating and now hungover (and just getting into the office at a quarter to five)?

No, I don’t think I’ve answered my own question. “Making rather scary” is still pretty opaque.”

Or, trying to scare the street urchins?

Danny Boy hopes “that mechanism isn’t set up to treat the TP as reusable!”

Saturday Morning OYs – September 21st, 2024

Recently surfaced by Dan Piraro for use in his Naked Cartoonist premium essay series.

And his Bizarro partner Wayno on his weekly blog posts sometimes chooses a panel and shows the changes he made to turn it into the strip version. In this case, the strip had to become a column.

For both versions, I had a mental-block kind of a problem, as the order of names in the caption does not agree with the placement of the characters in the drawing if taken left-to-right. No, there’s no reason they need to agree, so this is not a criticism, just a note on the mental twitch that left me studying them in puzzlement for a good minute. Anyone else?

The Mercenary Spirit

An anonymous contributor submitted this Argyle Sweater, commenting that “adding a Spirit sign would have made this funny. Without that, I’m just lost“, which was a comment that I didn’t understand.

For those who might not be able to intuit the Spanish, she’s saying “But, I am Dora“. Even without that, I thought the point of the joke was fairly clear, since many airlines now charge for all sorts of services that used to be automatic and complimentary. However, it turned out that Spirit Airlines (a no frills company with which I have never had the misfortune to fly) was the first airline to charge for carry-on baggage, even though there now are other companies that have adopted same the odious practice.

P.S. The Argyle Sweater really should get a prize for the MoSt AnNoYiNg FoNt in use by any newspaper comic.

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, June 02nd, 2024

chemgal sends in this prime LOL:

Alt text: Sorry to make you memorize this random set of digits. If it helps, it can also double as a mnemonic for remembering your young relatives’ birthdays, if they happen to have been born on February 5, 2018.

In case anyone was in doubt, there really is a very popular periodical called Wine Spectator.

Not the Midas touch

This striking but very puzzling Six Chix cartoon by the Friday chick, Maritsa Patrinos, was suggested by CIDU readers travelgirl, bobanero, and Jack Applin; and understanding remains elusive also for CIDU editors and for Comics Kingdom commenters.

(P.S., thanks for letting us know about https://www.usatoday.com/comics as another outlet for viewing King Features / Comics Kingdom cartoons.)

P.S.

Little did we suspect, when writing a title for this post based on the Six Chix comic, that we would almost immediately run across an actual Midas-themed cartoon!

CIDU QUEUE REMINDER

As always — but it needs saying explicitly again now and then — we like to think of this as a reader-participation site, and not just for your invaluable (or anyhow amusing) comments, but for suggestions of comics to run and discuss.

Please share your specific suggestions of panels or strips, in CIDU, LOL, and OY categories, either by direct email to

(that’s “CIDU dot Submissions” at gmail dot com) or by using the handy-dandy Suggest A CIDU form page!
