Russell on Denoting?

This appeared on Daily Nous on 13 September 2022, just a couple days after the expression “the present King of England” changed(?) its meaning(?).

The “To φ or not to φ” comics feature on The Daily Nous is done by Tanya Kostocha ,  Assistant Professor of philosophy at Ashoka University. Russell’s theory of descriptions is long gone, but is still studied for the sake of understanding the variety of refutations and reformulations that succeeded it. Oh, and also for its well-remembered example, “The present King of France is bald” (uttered in 1905, when there was no current King of France).

Ah, to recline

Thanks to Dirk the Daring for sending this from Take it from the Tinkersons, a strip relatively new to CIDU.

Looking over the recent instances of the strip, we find some relevance in the day before:

This maybe clarifies his attitude in the top strip, which Dirk characterizes as “Yeah, maybe just don’t hurt the one I love”. But still leaves the wife’s reaction shot in the last panel as unclear in intent.

(Recovered suggestion box item) Diamonds are for a while

In January of 2018 CIDU Bill implemented a Contact form page*, and during February 2018 a few readers used that form to send in their suggestions for cartoons to run and analyze on CIDU. We recently stumbled on that cache, and will be running three.

Thanks to timharrod for suggesting this Mutt & Jeff. He notes ‘The price of the earrings changes and the “joke” seems to be “You want good thing? Well, you get bad thing” with no wit or twist.’

BTW, this “printing” at GoComics was from 2018, but the original seems to be 1991, not some ancient run of Mutt & Jeff. I now forget what we decided was the way to use these similar tags, but I’m calling this Rerun rather than Retro or Classic.

Cheap, yummy, and already here

Thanks to Boise Ed for this tightly-matching-motto synchronous pair!

I am still in the market for a quick-and-easy lesson on how to turn auto-rotate off on my iPad momentarily, so I can turn it to more easily read sideways or ʇxǝʇ uʍop ǝpısdn, especially in images. For those not ready to risk neck strain trying to read the motto in the last panel of the Ginger Meggs, Editor Phsiiicidu has kindly provided a clipped and de-rotated image; and Ed provides a transcription as he discusses the synchronicity.

Boise Ed says ‘Ginger Meggs always has a little saying added on. Today, it is “If we are what we eat, then I’m cheap, fast, and easy.”  So then Herb and Jamal used almost the exact same line.’
