Credibility?

Some of you are parents. Others probably know parents. Most of you had parents. Is this something any parent had likely ever said, particularly given the skimpiness of the original outfit?

What saves this from an Arlo tag is that Amend’s women are recognizable as women, but not sexy. One can imagine what this would look like drawn by, say, Brooke McEldowney of 9 Chickweed Lane.

Some striking Macanudos

Some recent Macanudos. They’re all pretty striking, but in different ways, and generally neither straightforwardly funny (“in the classic sense”) nor definitely an outright CIDU. The tube-sculpture set as the featured image (above the post title) is a consummate meta. Others fit the “funny just for the absurdity of picturing it” tag. The one with Martin and the Olgas is kinda terrifying.

This should fulfill the category tag of “Momentary CIDU”. It presents something genuinely puzzling, but solvable quickly enough that it wouldn’t work as a daily standalone CIDU post.

Is the phrasing that somebody “is assisting the police in their inquiries” used everywhere? I first learned the phrase back when I worked for the Journals Division and a certain scholarly Association worked with us to draft a press release and statement to go in the journal they sponsored and edited but we published. The readership / membership had to be told that there would be an interim Acting Editor for an issue or more, as the Editor’s stay in the UK was being extended as he was needed there “to assist the authorities in their inquiries into the circumstances of the death of his wife”! Greedy for layers of pun, I almost wanted to see a ‘c’ in place of the ‘k’ — to reflect that they are drawn to look quite cute! And we would of course still recognize them as sharcs.

I don’t take—I mean, get—it

Mitch suggests that perhaps supposing the absence of showering has not gone as unnoticed as purple-ring person supposes, but that seems pretty weak. He also commented on “get a shower”, wondering if it was Canadian.

I spent 17 years growing up in Canada, as the son of a linguist, and am pretty aware of Canadianisms in general—although since those were my formative years, I occasionally use one without thinking, and have to explain to Americans what I mean. I never heard “get a shower” there, but it is the kind of thing that British English does differently. I work with a number of Brits and hear “different to” where an American would say “different from” every day, and it’s always jarring.

Gobs of fun

Andréa wonders how many still know this song, or is it just us geezers? I asked my daughters (in their 30s). One had heard of a slightly different version, the other had never heard it.

Neither of my two grandchildren (an 8 year old boy and a 6 year old girl) had heard of it. Feel free to report your own survey results!
