Let’s debate which way would be funnier

You ever think — or find yourself actually writing a comment — that the comic we’re seeing maybe has a point or makes a joke, or maybe doesn’t really, but in any case would be much better off if only some aspect were changed?

We just have to agree with some commenters on the GoComics appearance of this panel in October 2023 that getting a joke from this would seem to require knowing which of the gorillas ordered the virgin daiquiri. Is it the one facing us from the far end of the banquette and looking (maybe) a little abashed? Or could it have worked better with one gorilla and three humans? Or how about …

One original commenter said The joke isn’t about which ordered it – the joke is that the virgin one is simply a banana…. Does that help? Or does it just emphasize that *all* of them would probably want the plain banana?

Okay, sure, the little one is the “sub” woofer because it’s subordinate. I guess.
— But, but … When it comes to actual acoustic speakers (where the terminology originated), a sub woofer produces even lower pitches than a woofer, and therefore needs to be larger.
— Okay, that might fix the technicality, but it would ruin the joke.
 – Nah, it would be funnier that way, with the facts working.
 – Nah, it would be stupid that way. Everybody would say, “But what’s the joke?”

And what do mice know or care, about an MRI scan? Ah, but if it were about CAT scans, then we would understand the issue!

  1. In the “Strange Brew” one, I’m pretty much sold on the idea that is has to be the gorilla who is facing us that ordered the virgin daiquiri. It’s not just the situation, it’s the art work. Their expression is something I would unhesitatingly call abashed.

  2. “And if so, then what is the joke?” Nah, not meant as a punch line joke, just an amusing observational situation.

  3. The virgin daiquiri has nothing to do with which gorilla, it is the banana, it’s actually a little bit funny.

  4. But virgin drinks are not simply the fruit. A virgin peach daquiri is not just a peach. A virgin pina colada is not just a pineapple and a coconut.

And one of the drinks is colored the same as the banana. Is that a non-virgin banana daquiri? Did only two gorillas want banana drinks? How come only one gorilla ordered it virgin? None of it makes any sense.

  5. There are 4 “drinks” (if you include the banana) and 4 customers. Do we know if the author colored this one? If not, I would not trust the colors of the drinks.

  6. I’d suggest that they wouldn’t all like a plain banana. According to my sources, which consist mostly of animal trainers on late-night talk shows in the ’70s, primates in general love boozy drinks. Also cigars.

  7. @ Karl – Deering has taken to doing his own colors, and appears to use colored pencils and/or crayons, which is a major point in his favor. It’s not as polished as the watercolors that Georgia Dunn uses for Breaking Cat News, but it’s still a lot better than any kind of digital trickery.

  8. but it’s still a lot better than any kind of digital trickery

Digital trickery?! You mean using small discrete dots in one of three colors to fool your brain into thinking it’s seeing rich hues? They would never stoop to that!

    😉

  9. Recalling a moment from a Thin Man movie. Nick Charles (William Powell) is reviewing clues with another character in a diner booth. Asta the dog is also seated at the table, probably elevated by a child seat. The tough waitress arrives and asks who gets the raw hamburger.

    Added touch: Nick says “Me.”

  10. Is there such a thing as a superwoofer, I wonder? Or would that just be a midrange?

  11. Would a dog prefer raw hamburger to cooked? Even just seared, the cooked would have a more powerful scent, and smell like “people food”. What about wild animals? I’ll bet if I looked, I’d find some information on the subject.

  12. @ larK (9) – re: “digital trickery

I was referring to the high-tech “paint bucket” icon found in PC-Paint and other similar apps.
