Bargain Basement CIDU

Boise Ed submitted this Rabbits Against Magic strip as a CIDU almost exactly two years ago, but his commentary may have made it seem too political to appear here. I’ve adjusted Ed’s comment to remove the political adjectives: “I don’t get it. Why would a Twitter bankruptcy make the … fox move out of his parents’ basement? Someone [else] replied ‘Because without Twitter, he’s got nothing else to do‘, but I still don’t see a connection [between] … ‘Twitter’ and ‘basement’.

P.S.Xitter” hasn’t gone bankrupt since it was senselessly renamed, but hasn’t been for lack of effort.

Rebranding a Lead Balloon

This Rhymes with Orange strip might have worked perfectly back in early summer, but now it just seems awkward. The new corporate name just isn’t easy to adapt into usable slang, and even if it were, the political deadweight surrounding the takeover and renaming ruins any possible remaining humor.

In a curious instance of personal asynchronicity, it wasn’t until a couple of hours after I had written the text above (including the headline) that I saw Sunday’s Doonesbury, which needs no further commentary:

Non-synchro

An acknowledgement of using the same joke, about four years later, when the similarity was pointed out. From “Monster Picnic” in June 2021 (hat tip to Why Evolution Is True blog in 2022 where I saw it):

And by David Borchard in The New Yorker in 2016:

Monster Picnic acknowledged Borchart’s priority in this Twitter thread (see replies too):

[Very OT] Tweets I Don’t Understand

Following news that Baltimore’s mayor resigned after using her influence to force various agencies to spend hundreds of thousands of copies of a children’s books she wrote, Baltimore-based television writer/director/producer David Simon tweeted

To everyone coming @ me and demanding a season six of The Wire about Catherine Pugh, her ridiculous kiddie-books-as-shakedown and the rank complicity of Baltimore medical systems and charities and such in this citywide grift, let’s be clear: Full stop. No. I don’t do half-hour.

Does he mean he considers this to be a sitcom plot?
