Seashells by the Seashore

Another repeat from June, 2018. A few years ago, I went to see a jazz concert. The leader / clarinet player was a friend. The bass player didn’t show up, so the leader asked us to imagine a bass line being played in the background. I told him this was a blatant appear to our bass-er instincts.

Dirk the Daring sends this in: “I had to go to the comment because I didn’t understand it, fortunately it seems to be explained there. The old phones I get, look at the date, but the “Ewww” didn’t make much sense.”
Cleats is in reruns; this comic appeared on July 4 some years ago.

Mark H. sends in this Geezer Alert. “The vintage on “This Ole House” is 1954 and “Que Sera Sera” is 1956. It’s not clear that either Arlo or Janis was born then (I picture them as in their mid 60’s now).”
I was confused by Mark H.’s comment until I saw the next day’s comic; the link he sent in was one day off for me when I clicked on it. Here’s the comic Mark H. intended. Treat either or both comics as confusing.

I would think his outfit is somehow part of the joke, but how?

I’m not that familiar with this actor’s work. What’s this referring to?
But wait! There’s more! Not a synchronicity because I saw these a couple of days apart, but nearly the same joke, and I definitely don’t get this one, either.

In 1956 Ampex introduced the 2-inch quadruplex videotape, which became the first commercially successful format for television broadcasting.
Wouldn’t the joke work better with “new”?
Usual John sends this in: “Is this perhaps a colorist’s error? I don’t see any premature gray other than hair.”

Or is this a cultural reference? An obscure pun?

JMcAndrew asks, “I’d think at age 5 Dennis would already know what a zoo is. Did Henry take Dennis to some kind of strip club and tell him it was the zoo?”
From the expression on Henry’s face, I think that might be the case, though this seems odd and inappropriate for a DtM strip!
I’m reminded of the alleged bar or strip club named The Library, a great place to spend an afternoon “studying”…
billr sends this in, a bit late in the season for snowman comics: “I got nothing.”

Some hints here.
But while we’re on the topic of CIDU snowmen, there’s this momentary CIDU from 1966.
