Slightly belated wishes for all holidays for all from me.
Then again, at least I actually got here to wish same – Christmas decorations in the house almost nil this year – the small studio tree set up in the living room with a very small assortment of some of the more special ornaments – one can even see tree between the ornaments this year.
I realized last Saturday that since I still had to “shovel out” the living room and dining room before decorating and since Saturday and Sunday nights we were in the 18th century (which means most of both days also) and since I had to take 2 more parts of my tax prep exams on Monday and Tuesday nights, to which I had to add that it takes 3 nights to put up the three downstairs trees (all done simultaneous as ornaments boxed together) without the rest of the decorations – so Christmas decorating as normal was not going to happen. In 40 years married only one other year did we not decorate and the first year we did not have a tree. Sigh.
@ Grawlix – I thought that first link was truly awesome, and that was before I showed it to my son, who didn’t recognize what it was supposed to be a parody of, so I then had to look up “Bohemian Rhapsody” for him, and only then did I discover that the parody wasn’t just a perfect reproduction of the music, it was also a perfect rendition of the visuals.
P.S. @ Andréa – I think some of the subtitles in the video use slightly more faithful “linguistic” transcriptions of the original Hebrew, rather than the spellings that have become traditional in English.
P.P.S. @ (C)Han(n)uk(k)a(h) – According to Wikipedia, the answer to the song’s title is “חֲנֻכָּה” (that is of course assuming that WordPress does not choke on the reversed order of the letters).
P.P.P.S. @ CIDU Bill – Thanks very much for the card, which is (as far as I know) the only holiday card that we’ve received this entire season. So much for the Hallmark empire.
With one exception, every card we received came from somebody over the age of 60.
I wonder if, when people think “Hallmark” these days, their first thought is “sappy television movies” rather than “greeting cards.”

I manage two Howliday Card Exchanges (one is for Airedale folks [23rd year], one is for Cairn folks [14th year] . . . each person sends to every person on the list. Together, the lists equal 55 participants, so each person sends 55 cards (well, except for one or two who, even tho they signed up, didn’t realize Christmas was – again – on 25 December), for a total of 3,025 cards. And that is just from two card exchanges; I know a LOT of listservs run card exchanges (and Secret Santa, but the cost became ridiculous, so I stopped doing that).
Nary a card was a Hallmark card, tho; most participants use photocards because the point of these card exchanges is to see each others’ dogs. (If you’d like to see them – many of the dogs [and c*ts] dressed for the season), visit my Howliday Cards website at

Sometimes I think that card exchanges keep the USPS in business, at least in the month of December.
I send out Christmas cards every year about 2 weeks before Christmas. Today, the day after Christmas, I received four Christmas cards from people who I assume went “Oh @#$%, he’s still sending them.”

Husband’s sister (under 60) and our next door neighbors to our south (ditto) both sent us cards and with pictures of their children. (Neighbor’s was a nicer card.)
Neighbor on our other side, also under 60, did not send us a card – we are trying to figure out, if now that their illegal tenant has left, if they are renting out on AirBnb or such or if they have some “working girls” using their garage apartment. There are different cars there nightly – especially on weekends – and the solar path lights they have are all white – except when one or two is red and there always seem to be strange cars there when the lights are on. I would figure that they would send a Christmas card just to stay on our good side about all this.

To get serious here for a moment – If there are ‘working girls’ there, are they voluntary or captive? Might be a good idea to mention this to police department. When I moved to FL, I couldn’t believe how many ‘massage parlors’ were here, ’til someone tipped me off as to what they really are and yes, some/many of the girls are captive . . . there is a lot of human trafficking in this state, for obvious reasons.
Andréa – When they bought the house – maybe 5 years ago at most – they fixed up the attached garage and made it into (what we presume) is a studio apartment – illegal. A nice young woman lived there – she would apologize for her (equally nice) boyfriend who visit on the weekends parking his truck in front of our house sometimes. Robert would complain about them and I would tell him it could be worse, at least they are nice and try not to make problems. (Nicer than the home owners.) Early last year or late the year before she moved out – we presume they moved in together.
A few weeks on we started seeing a jeep parked in front of their house on and off and the same fellow would be there and we thought he was taking over the apartment. Then there was a constant flow of girls – a few times an older couple carrying items into the garage – bed, lamp,etc. and we presumed that they were helping the new tenant move in.
Now as a general rule there is no car parked out front and when there is it varies in what car it is. The lights in the garage only seem to be on when it is weekend. So, only thing we can figure is that they are renting to as a Airbnb type thing or for some other reason the person/people staying there vary constantly. They have solar lights along their walk. The lights are individually powered. They used to be all white. Since the change in tenant one of them – sometimes two of them, on the weekend, are often red instead of white – but then the rest of the time they are all white lights. Robert has decided that the light is red when one girl is there and two are when two are there. So if there are “girls” there they are coming and going on their own in their cars.
The fellow, his wife, and two daughters (one in elementary school and one born this past year) live in the house.
So we are not sure, but can’t figure out who would be renting the garage in a way that they are only there weekends, why the lights change color….
You’re living in a ‘red light district’ . . .
Andréa – just the one “house” if that is what it is. I was reminded last night when I took out the recycling – the husband seems to always be outside having a cigarette (which I understand smoking only outside) and on his cell phone- last night was different, he was texting instead of talking.
So, our car smells of his cigarettes (due to the small land plots here this occurs even if he is in front of his front door) and they have a pit bull who is out in their fenced yard alone often – and he can jump as high as the fence – plus this odd business. We like the neighbor on other side better – then again, we came home one night and he was outside smoking and on his cell phone, and stopped us to let us know that a car had been parked in front of our house with people sitting in it and that if anything happened he had taken a photo of their license plate. So they are not nasty or rude – they just annoy us and know we wonder about the “house”.

Ha–I just ran into that glitch myself just now, and so happen to have a YouTube link. Apparently the band’s name is Pledge Drive. The stereo production is wonderful…
