The Little Iodine reminds me both of The Producers, of course, but also the joke about the guy whose mule (or horse) dies, and he tells his friend he’s going to raffle it off. “You can’t raffle off a dead mule!” “Well, I’m not going to TELL them it’s dead, eh?” “What will you do when someone wins?” “I’ll tell him it died and refund HIS money!”
Apropos of nothing…
George Gant, in today’s Beware of Toddler, seems to be challenging Jonathan Lemon for the number of Easter Eggs he can stuff in a Sunday panel: https://comicskingdom.com/beware-of-toddler/2026-07-19
Here’s what I got:
Angus from Daddy Daze
Margot from Wannabe
Eightball from Rabbits Against Magic
Popeye
Cathy
Dandy by Dee Fish

Stoppage time: In soccer, the halves are 45 minutes long. During that time there may be stoppages of play due to injuries, water breaks, etc. The clock keeps running, but at the end of the half that time is added back on, and announced. So at the end of the half they may announce “10 minutes of stoppage time”. Of course, stoppages of play during stoppage time are added back also, so 10 minutes of stoppage time may turn into 11 or 12. The referee alone determines when the game ends by checking their watch.
This is all pretty quaint to those of us used to the precise timing used in basketball, when referees near the end of the game may confer with the replay to determine whether there is 1.2 seconds or 1.4 seconds left.
There used to be a show on PBS called Soccer Made in Germany. It was German club soccer with British announcers. Near the end of the game, they’d say things like, “We’re well into injury time now . . . and that’s game!”
For the cassette one, the actual callout should be for “Bic pen”.

I have only vague memories of “Little Iodine” and most are in the vein of “Who would name a child ‘Iodine'”?

Thanks! I knew “stoppage time” sounded vaguely familiar, but not being much of a soccer/futbol fan…
