Sunday Funnies – LOLs – May 24, 2026

I volunteer as a tax preparer, and Illinois requires information off the driver’s license or state ID in order to process the return. One of these information items is the weight shown. That’s used to match with the information the state has, to control identity theft.

But it’s pretty obvious from comparing what’s on the license with what I see in front of me that the state makes little attempt to confirm the information given.

Back in the day, you didn’t want to change anything on your license if you could avoid it (at least) here. When you renewed, if everything was the same, they take a new picture and put a sticker on the old license to use until the new one arrived. But if you made a change, they would take the old one and give you a slip of paper with the amended information, useless for photo ID.

These days you get a paper copy of what the new one will look like, so it’s probably not an issue. At any rate, my license has had the same weight for 50 years or so. Not overly accurate.

Lighting candles to counteract the smell of the litter box. Putting out the cat to prevent him from using it for a while, so she doesn’t have to clean again right away.

I have worked in income taxes since I was 8 yo. Dad had a new device called a photocopier – a 2 step process and I helped him by hanging up the wet copies to dry.

After growing up and going to college I became an accountant and continued, of course, to work during tax season – then by preparing returns. I have prepared returns for New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, North Carolina, New Mexico, and Hawaii (and probably forgetting at least one state).

It is only very recently that one’s driver’s license info is asked for – and it is not actually required on the Federal return or on our state return. Weight is not one of the things asked for, of course

Sadly this tax season will be my last one – two more returns to do (yes, they are late, and one of them is for 2024 so even more so – but neither is late because of ME). IRS has made it too hard for a practice as small as mine to continue as I cannot deal with some of the requirements with only 5 returns – such as buying commercial software to file the returns online.

I know some of these clients since I was a child. I tried to keep from needing to make them find someone new to do their taxes and hate that I will have to make them do so. And what the heck will I do next year from February through April 15 with just our return and our craft businesses returns to do? Clean the house?
