I found a reference to Dave Van Ronk, but that only explains the “NYC folk musician” part. The dictionary says that a “wonk” is a “person preoccupied with arcane details or procedures in a specialized field” (or more simply: a “nerd”), but I have no idea what the connection to taxes and agronomy is supposed to be.
“Wonk” is commonly used for a political nerd: a policy wonk.
That is a really desperate set-up for what is not a very good pun. But I see we have influenced him, with him taking the geezer label from us.
