Expectations

billr sends this in: “Second day in a row it’s not his usual dogs chasing squirrels, or marital ambiguities. No idea who these guys are or what this is about. Best I can come up with is the suit guy is an undertaker?”

Your editor thinks this would be more straightforward without that second line in the caption.

He’s been sent out to make a sales call of some kind. It’s supposed to be one the prospective customer wants, but he suspects it’s actually a cold call.

Maybe are the quotes wrong? The salesperson says the first line and the resident says the second?

I get sales calls like that all the time. “Hello. I spoke to your boss, and he suggested I call you.”

A long, LONG time ago–30+ years–a bunch of us geeks were at a lunch with a couple of sales reps. One of the sales guys told a story of having a big software trial going on at a company. This was mainframe backup software, and the guy doing the evaluation was going to do a full DR (Disaster Recovery) test on the weekend, the acid test for the product.

Monday morning, sales guy calls, asks for his contact. There’s a pause, and then the receptionist (remember them?) says that she’s sorry, but the man had passed away on Friday evening.

The rep instantly asked to speak to the guy’s manager. And told him that the dead man had agreed on Friday to buy the software!

He was all proud of himself for this, completely oblivious to the horrified expressions on the faces of everyone else at the table.

So yeah, I can believe this cartoon’s caption. Though I’m not sure why/how it’s funny.

Disheveled guy in decaying old house, no lights inside. Doesn’t look like he’d be expecting anybody, ever.

I agree with Lost in A2. The salesman was told by his company that the resident was expecting his visit, but that isn’t true and the salesman has realized that his company often lies to him about that.
