If he thinks Ferraris are expensive to fix, wait until he gets an estimate on that minibus of his.

The momentary CIDU is I assume that the Ferrari is not the car that was ahead of him. But I’ve got a little CIDU taste in my mouth thinking of a middle-class American old enough to hold a job and drive a car yet who is unaware of Ferrari as a brand.

Thanks, Andrew, yes my puzzlement was that the Ferrari was not the car in front of him. Or to put it from another angle, Jeremy’s phrasing of “throw it in reverse and just go around him” sounds like backing around somebody, as the reader has to fill in that he means back up a little, just enough to get a good angle to shift to forward and pull around the front car.

So I sort of wanted the drawing to show us that third vehicle, in front, about where he is standing.

BTW, I also looked at the Spanish version. It wasn’t much help, though instead of naming “Ferrari” it said “un auto de lujo” which I take to mean “a luxury car”. Here it is also, or even more, open to Andrew’s criticism that obviously a Ferrari / a luxury car is expensive to fix.

Mark H, yes indeed, the front car would be already gone, so I shouldn’t be asking to see it. But it is so prominent in his account (“just go around him”) and the Ferrari isn’t mentioned until the final panel, where it is shown. Which is why my first reading of “just go around him” was that, for unaccountable reasons, or forgetting to get back in Drive, he was backing around the Ferrari and cut it too close.

Buddy did more or less exactly this back in the early 80s. He was working for a landscaping company, driving a stake truck. He’d stopped a bit late and was blocking the crosswalk, so he checked his mirrors and backed up…over the hood of a Corvette. Whose driver was NOT happy, especially when the cop showed up, took one look, and started laughing!
