And that’s the Ghostly Trio hiding in the tower. It seems a pretty unfriendly thing for the Friendly Ghost to do. I guess the trio put Casper up to it.
In the play, Hamlet is actually very concerned that the apparent ghost of his father may be an imposter, although he does not seem to have considered the possibility that it’s a practical joke.
The 1995 film revealed Casper died of pneumonia. None of the other versions ever went there, with the long-running comic book implying he was born a ghost to ghost parents (and ghosts in general aren’t dead people, but just a race of supernatural creatures like elves).
Shadzane, that leaves the disturbing question of what happened to Casper’s ghost parents. Do you suppose they died?
As a child reading the Casper stories in Harvey Comics, it was never quite clear to me just why ghosts were supposed to be so scary. Yes, they yelled “Boo!” a lot, but that should produce no more than a momentary fright.
In Harvey Comics, I always liked Hot Stuff, The Little Devil. But he made even less sense than Casper. Supposedly he’s a child devil, so maybe devils are born and raised by their parents as human children are. But he has no parents apparent. Maybe baby devils are like cherubs: created looking like little kids and permanently looking like little kids. And then you’d expect Hot Stuff to go around doing evil things, as devils supposedly do, but mostly he went around helping little animals like Casper and Wendy always did.
Casper, playing a practical joke.

I wonder how current Casper is these days. How many people would recognize him? And by “people” I mean folks younger than a lot of us here.

There was a very popular film in the 90s with some forgettable sequels. And I heard tell there’s a new film in the works now.

There was a CGI film, followed by a series, called Casper’s Scare School in 2006. No idea how popular it was.

Has there ever been a Casper origin story showing what killed the child?
