    Today is the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby, and event that gets smaller in my mind with passing years. Horse racing, like boxing, has become more of a fringe sport in recent decades. Even large tracks like Arlington have closed and been sold off — in that case, possibly for a venue for the current hot sport, professional football.

    Too many other ways to gamble these days.

    My father did some construction work at Churchill Downs when I was in grade school, and brought home a big book commemorating the 75th running of the Derby in 1949. That was some years past, so the book was surplus. It was one of the few books in our home. For each year, there was a two page spread that was mostly about the horses but also included a few paragraphs of the events of that year, so that history of the Derby was the first history book I read.
