I had trouble with the premises of the original Topper TV series because I didn’t understand the distinction between when the ghosts would “dematerialize” and when they were simply invisible.

With all due respect to Topper, ghosts are not material and therefore cannot “dematerialize.”

Ed, there is a real thing of “quiet car” designation on some commuter train lines. So Roz Chast is picturing a step up from that.

In retrospect, no. But when you approach it contextless, on first take there certainly could be some uncertainty.

I think the couple kissing on the bench might be a reference to the scientific phenomenon of siphons.
