Saturday Morning OYs – September 9th, 2023

A couple of meta takes on this comic trope. The first one is from Will:

The OY element in that one must be the remark that SPIDERman has his own WEB page. It just doesn’t fall into place as a punch line.

(And so much out of date! Or restricted understanding. There are surely a hundred or more web sites for Spiderman.)

The “Iron Ago” comic seemed familiar, it was first posted to CIDU shortly after it was first published.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a daily “Bizarro” with Piraro’s signature on it, then I noticed that it was dated 2015.

P.S. @ Powers & Dana – The first two panels of that comic appear to mesh in with a prior story arc, only the third panel carries the OY. The URL in the gutter is incorrect, it should read https://viivijawagner.com/juba/

My take on Viivi & Wagner has been that the artist wants to convey “all men are pigs” and does it by using an actual pig.

VIIVI & WAGNER’s stripit can be read quite well with Google Translate. (which becomes Google Lens when the camera is selected) The language is Finnish.

For those who’ve never tried this, the translation actually replaces the foreign language text right inside the cartoon speech balloon. (using a very plain font)

Oops, I didn’t realize VIIVI & WAGNER was on GoComics. I also didn’t know That VIIVI & WAGNER was the name of the strip; I thought it was the authors. (I guess I’m still making life harder than it needs to be.)

MiB says Does anyone under 50 know what an iron is, and how and why it is used?

Well, in case anybody does need help, Mark Parisi has provided this useful Infographic!

I wonder how many current 13-year-old would realize that those “desert island” strips are all based on an obsolete type of cheap habitat for pet turtles.

I would think that some clothing still needs to be ironed – especially if someone like me who hates to fold laundry and leaves it tossed in the basket for days before folding or hanging much of the laundry (exception being husband’s shirts so I don’t need to iron them).

I have been putting off for a couple of months steam ironing a piece of embroidery I have been working on at reenactments as I hated how part of the stitching I did at the last reenactment event we did looked. (It is a kit and before I pulled out the stitches I had to make sure I had matching crewel yarn to replace what was being ripped out probably not enough in what was given and no one seems to sell it locally and I had to hand match the color as I do not what it would called.) Hopefully the steam will relax the fibers in the fabric so I can restitch those sections. I do use a travel iron on an ironing pad on a table to do any needed ironing.

@ MiB (10) & Meryl (13) – Except for an occasional party, I have not worn dress shirts that need to be ironed since I moved to Germany (nearly three decades ago), but my wife still keeps an ironing board set up in her work room. It remains idle when we do laundry, all she uses it for is to touch up a collar on a shirt or blouse when needed, normally just before she dresses for work. I’ve used that iron for a couple of art projects, but I can only remember doing a collar once or twice in the last several years.

Now that I’m no longer a productive member of society, by daily attire is a tee-shirt and cotton drawstring shorts. If I need to leave the premises, I put on my jeans over the shorts. Very occasionally I will dress “nicer” for some event.

When drier finishes, I take the tees out stack them on the table. Likewise the shorts. Socks are just in the basket. When I get into the bedroom, the tees go on hangers, and the shorts stack in their spot.

Well, now I feel really out of it. For years I wore white shirt, tie and suit to work. Never ironed any of it. Now that I’m retired, I haven’t worn long pants or socks in like 6 years, but I iron my shirts. In my defense, they are all cotton Hawaiian shirts, and I like them without the wrinkles. The weird part, is that here in Hawai’i, locals only wear aloha shirts for work, or special occasions, so I look like the over-dressed tourist.
