BTW, for regular readers of the comic, does the Girl have some sort of alter ego or doppelganger? Differentiated by number of hair spikes, and in this one by wearing shorts or skirt?

I don’t understand anything about this comic, but the Girl normally has just two hair spikes, so the four-spiked girl in shorts would be her “alter ego”. There’s an example of the two of them talking in a “Scarcity” post.
Well it seems to have something to say about the idea of “going along with the crowd”.
Perhaps the activity at challenge is not just joining in the race, but adopting a special high-stepping gait. Thus the knee damage remark.
According to TVtropes: “Aside from those two, recurring characters include the political activist Grrl (note the spelling difference, she serves as the active foil to Girl’s more passive character)…”
And thanks Andréa for calling attention to the knee brace, worn by the bearded man. I hadn’t noticed it, and it does add in a factor to the reveal at the end. When the Girl (and we) find out that the trophy says “Knee Problems” perhaps that is a way of identifying the winning runner. (But I think there’s still no clear moral at our grasp.)
This doesn’t make me laugh but it feels like it makes sense if four-spikes is Grrl: she sees something nobody else is doing, thus wants to do it because it’s rebellious. Does so, but then it becomes trendy, so she bails. And the lusers who piled on to doing it wind up in pain.
My thoughts were very similar to phsiiicidu’s. I’ve heard many people comment that running is actually bad for you because of the associated knee, back, foot, and other issues it can cause. If you train enough to win, you’ll end up with a trophy and knee problems.

I have no idea what’s going on. Showed it to Mom, she doesn’t get it either.

I’m wearing that same knee brace, albeit on the left knee.

Thanks for digging that out, Brian R.

Perhaps a trophy for “Knee Problems” is effectively the same as a “Participation” medal?

Hardly a thigh-slapper but sort of a storyline.

Or maybe it’s just that there are two girls of similar appearance.
Also maybe – maybe the winner is from Northern Ireland, and the trophy is minimising the effort which went into winning?

Note that Grrl is holding a vinyl record at the beginning, but ditches it to do something else that no one seems to be doing. Hipster behavior.

That is Grrrl. She’s a fairly frequent visitor to the strip. She’s a bit more activist than Girl, who’s more of an observer.
