400 Years Ago This Month

Is Darrin Bell just trolling us? 400 years would be January 1625. I got nothin’.

Not much help from ChatGPT, either:

January 1625 was a month marked by several notable events:

  • January 7: Ruggiero Giovannelli, an Italian composer, passed away.
  • January 13: Pieter Bruegel the Younger, a Flemish painter, died.
  • January 17: The Duke of Soubise led the Huguenots in launching a second rebellion against King Louis XIII with a surprise naval assault on a French fleet being prepared in Blavet.
  • January 19: Erhard Buttner, a German organist and composer, committed suicide.
  • January 27: Adriaen Valerius, a Dutch composer and poet, died.

And the Nominees are…

Back in August(), Usual John submitted this One Big Happy strip as a partial CIDU, commenting: “I guess I sort of understand the comic, but I have no idea what movie star Ruthie has in mind.

I agree with John: I cannot recognize any resemblance to a specific actress; she just looks generically old and ugly (both with and without the “app”, which I assume is the intended gag).

P.S. () I had a little difficulty finding this strip, because the URL was incomplete. Please remember to make sure the URL you submit is specific to the date of the intended comic, and not just the general “front page” URL for “today’s” comic.

Feets Don’t Fail Me Now!

There are ten pairs of cartoon feet in this Sunday “Ink Pen” strip from 2010:

Unfortunately, the author didn’t bother to make any of the dialog “characteristic”, which might have helped to identify each figure. I have a positive ID for only five and a half of them. Can anyone match all ten (unseen) talking heads to their correct feet?

P.S. Bonus assignment: Provide an unmistakable (but very short) quote for each character.

Sunday Funnies – LOLs, August 18th, 2024

This is close to a CIDU, as there doesn’t seem to be a single best / obvious answer to the question.

Tim Harrod sends this in: “Whether you laugh or not, Jim Davis is historically reliable at coming up with a punchline. But here, the joke is apparently that the eggs are really spicy… and a lot of people ordered them. It could have been a scheme to sell a lot of milk, but then Irma should have more of a sly grin in the last panel.”

The gag seems straightforward, but Tim’s right: she should have a sly, knowing grin on her face.

On Monday, will we see Irma’s lasagna?

Probably more of an Awww than strictly an LOL.

Bonus: Luann congratulates itself

They tell you where the answer can be found.
Before consulting that official answer, as a regular Luann reader but not a long-long-term fan, I was able to decode many of the individual clues, but could not give it an overall meaning. How will CIDU readers do, on either level?

Additional clue from CIDU

All the individual clues decode to the same thing.

Second additional clue from CIDU

It’s a number
