The “pot of coffee on a warmer” style of office coffee is a thing of the past in workplaces I know. It’s all Keurig (r) or similar cartridge-based coffee now. (Wiley) You get bad but fresh coffee that way.
For many years the state of Virginia had a “Kings Dominion Law“, which prohibited schools from starting before Labor Day. This law was not repealed until 2019. (See the last paragraph before the target of the link.)
Most school districts start before. Except in the comics, where tradition rules. Over in Sally Fort, Hillary prepares for the first day. In Heart of the City, Steenz has always been pretty loose with the school calendar. They were in school well into July. After a week-long visit to her father, today’s strip is back in school.
Yeah, it’s more common to start after Labor Day when Labor Day is earlier.
Of course the farther south you go in the U.S. the more likely it is that schools start in August in order to minimize how much of June they’re in class.

Labor Day is late this year, on the last possible date. So some school districts started school last week.
