No lyrics occur to me, but I thought the point was that everyone at the party has to do with coffee, not tea – apart from the cup and the lid. So if the Earl Grey teabag gets … friendly with the cup, which might involve leaving the label on a string “hooked” over the rim – well, the lid will be left with no one but coffee items to socialize with. I wonder if the cup and lid didn’t come to the party together. Never did like Early Grey …
Not that I make full recognition of all the objects. What, for instance is the first one inside the room, the one holding the door for the tea bag? Looks to me like a nipple from a nursing bottle! But that doesn’t make sense, for either tea or coffee. So maybe a coffee-based candy?

Second, Tom Waits reference? Not intentionally, but possibly unintentionally, or even freudianly (is that a word?).But what do you mean? “Never did like Early Grey …”? Sounds a little like “Never could stand that dog” (Frank’s Wild Years) I suppose.
But no, I just disapprove of perfuming tea. Or stealing an honest lid’s date.
The “can opener” is the thing espresso grounds are put in. It clamps to the espresso machine. The spouts on the back/bottom are where the espresso comes out.
Boise Ed(9), that is a Portafilter. The holder for the filter of an espresso maker. And the name happens to be Italian for ‘filter holder’.
The espresso tamper is used to press(tamp) the espresso coffee grounds into the filter, and the portafilter locks onto the espresso maker and the steam is then pumped through the grounds, condensing and dripping into the waiting demitasse cup.
So I guess the tamper and portafilter came together, too. Thanks for the info. (I’m not a coffee addict, differentiating me from my late father and my wife.)

The lid presumably came the party with the cup, and expected to go home with it. Hence the dismay when that didn’t happen.
