Mitch4 sends this in.

So, what sort of seed would be used?
The general theme of car parts stuck in the ground also occurs in Sally Forth’s current storyline. I’m not going to explain any of the time-traveling aspect of this, though.

The inspiration is perhaps the Cadillac Ranch in Texas.

A bumper crop is just a really good harvest. As an adjective, “bumper” apparently means “big” but I’ve only ever heard it in that context. I used to think the crop got “bumped up” by fallen seed, because my dad was an inveterate bullshitter.
Somewhere there is a joke about automotive plants but I’m not finding it this morning.

Aha! Thanks, Andrew, those objects are BUMPERS from cars!

Yeah, and a few miles down the road from Cadillac Ranch is the Don Harrington Discovery Center, which has an animatronic T.rex out front.

Cadillac Ranch.. Right off the eastbound side of i40 just before Amarillo TX.
Cool to see “rotting” caddies painted with spray cans for decades. When we were there the ground of this “agricultural field” was littered with spray cans. Ultra windy and cold that day. But after years of hearing about it, seeing it was interesting. The most interesting thing in Amarillo. (besides the Big Tex steakhouse and the “Jesus Christ is Lord Travel Center”)
a unique, faith-based truck stop located in Amarillo, Texas, that permanently closed in 2013. It featured Scripture on the fuel pumps and hosted on-site church and Bible study services alongside standard amenities.

Mitch4: Were you unfamiliar with the term, or is the artist really bad at drawing bumpers?

Most cars today don’t even have separable bumpers like that. It would be understandable for a young person to have no idea what a bumper is.

Brian, well I certainly know what bumpers are, though admittedly in my youth I confused the term with “fenders”. But I just didn’t see bumpers in the drawing until some comments brought it out. I think I was stuck on the idea that these things in the field had grown from something planted smaller, maybe toothbrushes — except these didn’t look like toothbrushes, so I was trying mechanical pencils, etc etc.
