There are two types of WANTED posters. One is information about a criminal wanted by law enforcement. The other is where you want to sell something, or buy something, or want a new roommate.
You would expect a person dressed as an Old West sheriff to be posting the first type, but he’s posting the second type.

remember the expression “the want ads” which was either a subcategory or simply an overall predecessor/alternative to “the classifieds”.
And then “help wanted” , which might have “male” or “female” added on..
