I was going to suggest that “jackass” was a reference to the TV show of that name where people engaged in idiotic stunts like this. But the comic appears to be dated 1969, so that’s out. I guess it’s just being used generically for “idiot.” Three-stage rockets were, of course, big news in 1969.

    Sagittarius is a total mystery.

Sagittarius is a winter(-ish) astrological sign. It’s not visible in (Northern) winter because the sun passes through it in November and December.

DemetriosX has the jackass reference. When used to describe a human, it meant “fool” before it meant “jerk”.

Note that the three stages are “Krunk”, “Chunk”, and “Krung”.

Suppose you take “sport” in the throwaway panels question as having a meaning like definition 5 in Merriam-Webster’s entry for “sport” as noun https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sport : “an individual exhibiting a sudden deviation from type beyond the normal limits of individual variation usually as a result of mutation especially of somatic tissue” — I think this is the sense behind “sport peppers” . Then a centaur, or a flying horse, or whatever Saggitarius is*, would be a sport in the sense of mutant.

    [*] Besides my sign.

It’s possible the responding ant was just interpreting “What’s your favorite winter sport” as a stand-in for “what’s your sign”.

Yes indeed. And then, what is “Sagittarius” a stand-in for? Archery? Or Equestrian :-) ?

I don’t remember any use of “jackass” in the comics or TV in 1969. We said “donkey” for “ass” just as we said “rooster” for “cock”.

I thought they were Curly, Larry and Moe.

I took her response as a recognition that his question is just another variation on “What’s your sign?”

“Sagittarius” makes no sense to me. The rest of the comic does.

Thor is performing a crazy stunt for thrills. It has three stages.
He is wearing skates and skis and riding a wheel.
He starts by riding his wheel at high speed, then skis, then skates.
He has planned it out. He has placed mounds that allow him to transfer from one to the other without stopping.
It ends with him crashing into a tree.
The humour lies in the unexpected end, and the slapstick.
