Hard as snails

A CIDU from Dirk the Daring.

The BOB MANKOFF PRESENTS: SHOW ME THE FUNNY (ANIMAL EDITION) feed on Comics Kingdom seems to stick with some kind of animal for a week or two, then move on to a series with another kind. After a good run of ostriches, they have moved on to snails. I’m hoping for a visual to go with “Look at that S-Car go!”.

  1. @ Powers – I was wondering whether it might be her “dingbat” (in the tradition of Oliphant’s “Punk” or that 8€$#!5$€\€$ squirrel that we have all learned to hate), but Conde Nast has only two of her drawings, and neither one has a tiny chameleon.

  2. What is the reproduction of snail?
They have both female and male reproductive cells (they are hermaphrodite). They don’t actually need to mate with another snail in order to reproduce, self fertilisation is possible. After mating they lay around 80 white eggs in a damp, underground nest.

Which still doesn’t ‘splain the little one. I thought maybe the males were small and the females were large. I know in some barnacles, the male pretty much ‘disappears’ or is absorbed into the female.

  3. Marine snails (and there is no indication of water in this comic) are not hermaphroditic; the females are much larger than the males. FWIW . . .

  4. By pure coincidence (really, is there any other kind), I’ve been watching YT videos of cleaning barnacles, snails, etc. from sea turtles, which is why I knew about snail reproduction.

Here’s one of a gazillion at least . . . I find them soothing, which is much needed these days . . .

  5. CartoonStock.com has several Jody Zellman panels with the lizard in them . In all the ones I found, he’s not relevant to the scene; he is simply in it. I love his using the shell to lie back in the sun in this one.

  6. Technically, the snail doesn’t even NEED that little creature, and even if it isn’t relevant to the joke, it distract from it to a large degree; the snail should just be enjoying a smoke by him/her/themselves.

  7. Unfortunately, Kevin A is correct: Ms. Zellman is just another cartoonist who has joined the “dingbat” bandwagon:

  8. This one (and so far for me, they’re all from different angles) has the possibility of a small face on a body, or a large face by itself, just hanging there with a droopy lower lip.

After 5 sightings, in unique places, my brain has not come up with a stable idea of what this creature looks like.
