I’ve heard the 8th dwarf was Bloomberg. What other names have you heard?

At first glance I thought the objects lying in the sand on that island were outdated flip-phones and VHS cassettes. Then I re-read the caption and saw that it was a “remote island”. I would say that qualifies as an “OY”.

Ah, so the cat’s John Audubon…!
It took a sec. for the “remote” in “remote island” to make itself known…

The Chuckle Bros panel was not available in higher resolution, as far as we could find. That seems to contribute to difficulty making out what those devices on the ground are; and to noticing and reading the caption in the picture… And indeed those are the two ends of a pun connection.
Thanks also for your remark on the Bliss cartoon. I can’t quite get right a quotation (or its attribution) about the cat who styled himself an ornithologist but was destined to remain an ornithophage. That might have been better to invoke than the Tennyson bit. (Which I sometimes confusedly think of as the Darwin bit.)

I once renamed all seven dwarves: Sleazy, Gropey, Dumpy, Basher, Weepy, Sappy and Four-Eyes.

By the time their number dwindled from fifty to eight, the other dwarves began to suspect “Hungry”.

The Boychuk’s website is defunct†, and GoComics appears to have the same image as shown above, but the problem may be that WordPress resampled the file to fit it into the CIDU template. Let’s see if putting the native URL into a comment preserves the original resolution:
P.S. † – Extortionate mercenaries are offering the Chuckle Bros. address for sale for a mere $2888.

Along the same lines at @Philip:
“The graphic novel adaptation of the cult-hit story “8: The Previously Untold Story of the Previously Unknown 8th Dwarf,” published as one of three stories in “TaleSpins” by Michael Mullin. When their 8th roommate starts acting weird, the seven dwarves nickname him “Creepy” and banish him to the cottage basement. From there he affects the Snow White story we all THOUGHT we knew.”

I once had a conversation with a female co-worker who complained that because of a long bad day she was feeling both sullen and dumb. I went for the seven dwarfs pun and tried to sympathize with her for being “both Grumpy and Dopey,” but I got my tang all tonguled up and what came out of my mouth was “it must be unpleasant being both Dumpy and Gropey.” Fortunately, once I explained it, she thought it was funny.

A cartoonist, Jay Fosgitt, did a Godfather variation and spoke of someone “sleeping with the clamshell phones.” I LOLed.

Only after Kilby presented the higher-definition “remote island” was I able to identify them as “remotes.”

For the record, the names are Doc, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Bashful and Dopey. Preserving the rhythm and general sound, my list is Schmuck, Crappy, Sleazy, Slimy, Creepy, Asshole and Horny. Somehow I find my list of names easier to remember than the original.

I didn’t get the remote one until I read comments. For some reason the island name didn’t stick with me as I went to try to figure out what was going on.

There were a lot of names thrown around for the movie, so there are quite a few rejected ones (including some that had gone some way toward character writeups or possible scenes), including
Deafy
Jumpy

Punch had a cartoon of the dwarfs welcoming a clean-shaven relative in a business suit. “Look who’s back … Yuppie!”
Somewhere else there was drawing of several irritable dwarfs pulling up their pants as one tells a passerby, “Snow White’s in a bad mood, so we all got Grumpy.”
During WWII Disney made an animated short about malaria, capped by the dwarfs cheerfully demonstrating mosquito control: Screens, DDT, spraying oil on ponds and puddles, and keeping a hungry frog under one’s hat.
There’s a Fantagraphics volume, “The Return of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, a collection of stories from European Disney comics. One introduces Breezy, the eighth dwarf who decamped long ago in search of fame and fortune. Returning home for a visit, he uses a magic charm to create the illusion of success — unaware it’s part of a plot by the evil queen.

That’s an IDU for me.

@ Brian – It is a credit to your propriety that you didn’t see the point of an incredibly crude joke: she wasn’t willing to “put out”, so they all forced themselves on one of their own number.

Ah, I see. I assumed that she’d done something to them due to her bad mood.

Shouldn’t Dopey be the one who has by default to “put out” for the others, as was his role in the famous “Disneyland Memorial Orgy” poster?

@ Shrug – While that drawing does show Doc “doing” Dopey, the other five are all working on Snow White. Besides, the misdirection in the joke only works with the “anger” implied by “Grumpy”.
P.S. I was about to provide a link (or even embed the image), but that drawing (by Wally Wood) is decidedly NSFW and therefore not CIDU material.
