I’ve seen more expressive scribbles. Can’t tell if this is “I’m screaming mad!” or “I’m going to be inscrutable for a few minutes” or “You think you’re so smart?”.
The uncertainty between whether he’s completely laughably wrong or whether her scribble thoughts laughably express something meaningful which he does here made it work for me.

So, is she supposed to be saying something in particular, but it is presented to us as just the scribble? What is it the man there hears?

These kids’ thoughts are just a bit more legible. That must be due to a difference between scribble-thinking and stormcloud-thinking.
