  1. He’s an inanimate object, so he’s incapable of perception, or even sentience.

  2. I like the thought that went into #s 2 & 3, but billybob got it
in one. It reminds me of the quandary, “If you turn the air
conditioner up, will you make the room warmer or cooler?”

  3. Food for a balloon dog is air. So “full” and “empty” are both the same condition… nothing in the bowl but air.

  4. “It reminds me of the quandary, ‘If you turn the air conditioner up, will you make the room warmer or cooler?'”

This one has an objective answer, for at least some cases. My air conditioner has a dial, not a thermostat. If you turn the knob to 0, the unit shuts off. If you turn the knob to a higher number, it operates faster, producing more cooling in the room. YMMV.

  5. “Is an empty bottle of helium…”

Empty of everything, or just empty of helium?

  6. “If you cut a hole in a fishing net you end up with fewer holes, not more.”

    Not if you cut lengthwise.
(What am I talking about? Consider the simplest structure that can be called a “net”… you have seven segments of string that make a squared-off figure 8. Cut the middle strand, but not across it, but down the length of it, almost but not quite the point where the knots at the end of the segment are. That one segment used to be like this I, but now it’s like this, O, but the original two holes in the net are still there, on either side.

  7. In any system with rankings expressed as numbers, there is a potentially dangerous ambiguity about expressions like “our rank has gone up by two places during the last month”.

  8. “The fishy equivalent of splitting hairs”

Agreed. But I like lateral-thinking puzzles.

  9. @James Pollock

Except, if you cut a string lengthways you are cutting across the twists that make it up so it falls apart. Instead of two half strings to make your extra hole, you’d have no strings to make your extra hole, leaving you fewer holes.

    You did specify strings. 😛

  10. “You did specify strings”

I didn’t specify “cutting across the twists”, though.

  11. “you’d have no strings to make your extra hole, leaving you fewer holes”

…or wouldn’t you have a lot more tiny strings to make a lot more holes?

  12. If you have a loose helium balloon in your car and you step on the brakes suddenly, which way does the balloon go?
(If you are moving and step on the brakes, not if you are stopped and step on the brakes.)

  13. “Is an empty bottle of helium lighter or heavier than a full one ?”

A full bottle of helium contains a lot more atoms of helium than one whose pressure was reduced to one atmosphere, i.e., the usual “empty” The empty bottle is lighter.. Even if you blew out the remaining helium with air, the tank would still be lighter than one that had helium at more than a hundred psi pressure. People do weigh tanks of gas to see if they are full or empty….

  14. “If you have a loose helium balloon in your car and you step on the brakes suddenly, which way does the balloon go?”

Up, if you have a convertible.

Otherwise, it depends on how you’re moving. Driving along the road? On a giant treadmill? Free-falling off a cliff? Sinking to the bottom of the ocean? Entering the event horizon of a quantum black hole?

Obviously this creature is capable of perception and sentience. It is having a thought and it can tell the dish is there, though it’s not sure what to make of its contents/lack of contents. The rules of our world do not apply there.
