A twofer today (unrelated, not a synchronicity)
Boise Ed sends this in:

Linda sends this in: “It’s late. I’ve had two beers. I’m pushing 73 years old. Somebody explain this to me?”

Mouseover text: “People out here catching strays out here catching strays.”
The guru, who would normally sit on the mountaintop, is troubled by high winds so has tied his beard on to stop him blowing away. Being an enlightened one he can, of course, levitate.

“Catching strays” means receiving unwarranted criticism aimed at somebody else. Being metaphorical collateral damage, so to speak. I think it comes from the idea of being hit by bullets fired at somebody else, innocent bystander caught in the crossfire, that sort of thing. Dogcatchers catch real strays, but here are catching metaphorical strays in the implication that their job is so lowly and undesirable yet an undesirable person couldn’t be chosen for that job.
This makes me wonder, though, if dogcatcher was ever an elected position.

@ DemetriosX (3) – According to “Explain XKCD“: “… in recent times, the only elected dog catcher was Zeb Towne, who was elected dog catcher in Duxbury, Vermont…” (he was elected in 2003, and served at least until 2018, when NPR posted the linked article). The Wikipedia article on Animal Control Services, says that the “…electing of dogcatchers was found to be illegal in Vermont in 2018. The job was then designated as appointment-only, with Zeb Towne, the last elected dogcatcher in Duxbury, being unanimously appointed to the position. “

LOL. I don’t think the cartoonist came up with that, but it’s better, Downpuppy!
