A week joke at best

Jack Applin writes:

“When Labor Day falls at the end of the first week”? Where does Frazz take place? In the United States and Canada, Labor Day is the first Monday in September, which isn’t at the end of a week.

I’m guessing that what Mallett means is “When Labor Day is on the 6th or 7th of September”, i.e., near the end of the first week of September. But I still don’t get the joke even if that’s the intent.

    Some school systems start after Labor Day, so school has barely started and it’s already mid-September, as opposed to years where Labor Day is earlier in the month.

    When Labor Day falls at the end of the first week of school. As in this year, when Labor Day was on the 7th, many (northern) schools that normally start in early September started before Labor Day instead of after. So by the time Labor Day finally rolls around they’ve already been in school for (almost) a week and it feels like mid-September already.
