Besides that, the comic is in English, and relatively few Americans would recognize pomme frites. What would characteristically go on the plate with french fries? A burger. But that doesn’t rhyme with “cake” either. Hmmmm. Costco now sells something called a “bake,” but that would be pretty obscure, too, even if it came with fries.
Steak frites, meaning “steak [and] chipped potatoes” in French, is a dish consisting of beefsteak accompanied by fried chipped potatoes. It is commonly served in Belgian and French brasseries, and is considered by some to be the national dish of Belgium, which claims to be the country of origin.
“Cake Fries” as a play on steak frites were a major plot point in an episode of the catchphrase-laden Disney Channel cartoon Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja.

In the synchronicity of life, today had a new video from James May (formerly of Top Gear) in which he pitted his two production people, Lucy and Eve, against each other in a cooking contest. This was another of his videos about nostalgic dishes, this time from an old UK restaurant chain, the Berni Inn.
The dishes chosen for them to prepare were: prawn cocktail, steak and chips, and lemon/sultana cheesecake. Chips are of course, in the UK, what are fries in most of the world.
