I can name all the cats in that image, but at least one of them makes me feel like I’m 100 years old.

For the Lio strip, I believe the cats are as follows, starting from the upper left and proceeding clockwise:
Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. This iteration seems uncharacteristically angry.
Mooch from Mutts. This version strikes me as looking just like the original.
Bill the Cat from Bloom County.
    Bucky from Get Fuzzy.
Krazy Kat from the strip of that name. The oldest cat shown.
Garfield from the strip of that name. I believe Garfield is the only cat shown whose strip is still being syndicated every day.
Felix the Cat. Felix was originally a silent film cartoon, starting in 1919 (making Felix almost as old as Krazy), but was also the star of a comic strip from 1923 to 1966. A nicely drawn version.
I am surprised by the absence of Heathcliff, one of the most successful comic strip cats (arguably the most successful after Garfield).

Is it an intentional dis to Heathcliff to not include him….? … even though he DID (I will argue) include the cat from Peanuts (… who Snoopy (and Woodstock…?) only ever interacted with off-panel)?

El Cucui, all the cats are identified above. Which one do you think is supposed to be the unseen ‘Peanuts’ cat?

Also was surprised at the lack of Heathcliff. Not too surprised at the lack of Catbert. Middlin’ surprised that he’d include Felix but not Tom.

Nah, all the claw-holes are connected to visible cats. Snoopy’s neighbor is an artist of the claw…
Possibly Heathcliff is missing because it’s rather difficult to distinguish two orange tabbies? Garfield doesn’t look exactly the same (at least, not the modern version), but they’re awfully similar.

    Felix or Krazy?

Felix the Cat didn’t have his “bag of tricks” until the TV cartoon series in the 1950’s. Not that it really matters; he’s still a cartoon.

Usual John (4): Where did it say they had to be currently new comic cats? Not only is Mutts currently distributed, but so are decades-old Calfin and Hobbes strips (and most are just as funny as they were when new).

As to why yous appears twice? I’ve had that happen and it relates to which browser you use. When I post via Mac Chrome, the system works as one might expect. With Mac Safari, using the fingerprint, it works normally if I don’t click the button to post it. The fingerprint apparently does that for you, so you don’t want to also do it manually. In no case, in my experience, does it ever remember my having logged on previously.

@Boise Ed: Nowhere does it say they have to be currently new comic cats. That was just my observation.

Thanks for your comments on posting.

There WAS a visible cat in Peanuts for a while. Freida, of the naturally curly hair, got a cat expressly to take Snoopy down a notch or two. He was almost always shown as totally limp, eyes closed and smiling, as he was being carried around like a rolled-up rug.

  13. Unknown's avatar

@larK: Both, but mostly Krazy. Felix at least gets referenced now and then, but this is the first time I remember seeing Krazy Kat since I was a kid.

@bensondonald: Freida’s cat was named Faron, after country singer Faron Young (IIRC). Faron also showed up in the film, Snoopy Come Home.
As for comic cats, where’s Desdemona (Mutt & Jeff), Spooky (Smoky Stover), Sylvester, and Cool Cat?

@bensondonald & @Brad Walker: I very much remembered Freida’s Faron (not either name of course, just remembered very old Peanuts strips with them)… and I’m thrilled that y’all called be out on that. Thank you.

I also remembered about Brutus from the “Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown” TV special
