I didn’t see much in that music video about getting a degree except a tortured pun on the amount of heterosexual sex the protagonist was having.

But maybe I’m missing some artistic subtlety.

I’m told that the part about “Is your muffin buttered? Would you like for us to assign someone to butter your muffin?” is quoting a scene from a movie of the time.

I liked that joke about academic sense of “the third degree”. It fits with my dislike of the postmodern literary style which (derived from French models of course!) likes to say one should “interrogate” assumptions instead of simply “question”. And when I hear that someone proposes to “interrogate this text” I want to say “You mean slam it with a phone book until it reveals the names of its co-conspirators?” . I.e., the third degree.

@Powers, don’t be so grumpy! I’ll post a youtube link to a history of the band WetLeg and the song “Chaise Longue”. They were extremely popular, and credited in this video with reviving a spirit of fun to British pop/rock.

The music video was made and released in 2021, and the quoted movie dialogue Danny mentions is from Mean Girls — given the date of the music vid it could not be the 2024 Mean Girls but there was a bigger deal original version earlier in the century.

I would think the song would appeal to usage geezers in the vicinity, as it endlessly repeats the name of the title furniture in its traditional “correct” form — not imitative French complete with accent, but still an English term with obvious French origin — rather than the over-nativized form “chaizze lounge” which I grew up with.

Thank you, Deety (6), for explaining what that was all about. I can’t even imagine why anyone would name their group that.

@ Grawlix (9) – Cynthia occasionally gets driven around by Pillsbury’s chauffeur, so I don’t think she would have any trouble using a taxi.

I just thought taxis were considered old-fashioned these days, and kids would be more familiar with the rideshare thing.

Uber’s basic policy is no unaccompanied minors under 18. Some places apparently are developed programs for that, I think with extra background checks or something.

The reason Uber became popular is because it is usually cheaper than a standard taxi. Cynthia does not expect to pay for this one, and even if she were, her parents are extremely rich.
