(Note however that artist Eric Scott has a comment on GoComics suggesting it is just typo. But could he be still joking at another level?)
Comics I Don't Understand 
Even before I saw the parenthetical third paragraph, I was already going to suggest that it was simply a lettering error. (I don’t want to call it a typo, since the variable letter shapes and sizes indicate that the text was not done with a computer font.)
P.S. For those who want to continue running with the mispelling, I would favor treating the “…EEN” as a non-standard English diminuitive.† Thus, those apples would count as “not recommended”, rather than “totally verboten“.
P.P.S. † – I had a friend in Oregon who used to refer to toddlers as “small child-eens”.
I thought it had to do with the shopper being a Klingon. Look at her forehead!
@ Carl Fink – I assumed the wrinkled brow indicated that she was ticked off at being lumped together with Eve (or perhaps that she was seriously considering yielding to temptation).
