Well, well, well, look who it is.
Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one.
The color change was a [adjusts shades] red herring.
Ach, an ancient trope that I’ve never heard spoken & Six Chix laziness left me gestumped.
So it goes.
And the traditional middle-school followup:
— Well, well, well!
— That’s three holes in the ground.
I knew someone who liked to respond with “That’s a deep, dark subject that nobody is going to get to the bottom of.“
P.S. The color variations are to make it appear that they are three different wells, and/or to disguise the fact that the black line drawing was xeroxed.
zbicyclist: Thank you, that was bothering me but I wasn’t sure why!
chipchristian: Yes, the different coloring threw me off totally. If they’d been the same colors I might have gotten it. Or not.
One more and I’d guess Foursome Wells
@zbicyclist Unless you understand that the Brevity pun is perfect, you haven’t worked it through. I wrote a whole paragraph that day and, luckily, realized I was wrong before posting it.
@ Zbicyclist (7) – The point of the gag is that “step” indicates that they are related, without sharing all of the same characteristics.
Mitch4 – an old joke of my dad’s – thank you!
(Yes I know it was original to him, but when I was little I thought it was.)

I can appreciate the Brevity pun, but a well and a cistern are very different things. https://www.rainbrothers.com/cistern-vs-well
