  1. Alien reference.

If you have problems with squirrels and think squirrels getting into your garden and eating your plants from the inside out is a common and recognizable occurrence it’s conceivable you’d think this was funny.

    If you don’t….

  2. It looks like Buni is encroaching on Cyanide and Happiness territory: “It’s just gross, it’s not supposed to be funny“.
P.S. One thing that bothered me when I first saw “Alien” was that given what happened with the egg, why didn’t anyone think to do an x-ray or ultrasound on him? And no, I have no intention of rewatching the movie just to see if my memory of that enormous plot hole is accurate.

  3. Kilby: They ran a full body scan on Kane almost as soon as they brought him back aboard the ship (right after they unsuccessfully tried to remove the facehugger). Not a plot hole, sir.

  4. @ Tom – Thanks for the correction, but if they ran that scan with the facehugger on him, then they needed to repeat it after they did get it off, to see if it had left anything behind.

Even if it’s not in the movie, that’s not proof that they didn’t… it just happened offscreen.

Alternatively, the Nostromo is a tugboat, whose crew sleeps while in transit. Why would it have advanced medical scanners on board? They got whatever cheap equipment the company thought they could get away with, because Nostromo isn’t even supposed to be doing alien biological examinations.

We (the audience) do tend to fall into this high-tech equals high status (Star Trek) fallacy. Just because this is a science fiction movie doesn’t mean this was a cutting edge diplomacy exploration vessel. It was very clear this was a low-end cargo carrier ship. There’s no reason to assume medical procedure would be anything more than rudimentary first aid and the on-board physician would be anything but a saw-bones.

  7. That Lio strip was somewhat uncertain to me. You’d think that this was something he put together, ala Calvin. However, he seems delighted and surprised, as if it happened spontaneously.

In a bit of synchronicity, as I was typing that I was listening to a podcast (This Might Get Weird) where they suddenly started discussing Sigourney Weaver. However, it was in the context of Ghostbusters.
