1. BC is smart enough to know that the Earth orbits the Sun. He’s stupid enough to think that, like the moth, it’s spiraling into the source of light. He’s smart enough to get the (almost) right answer based on faulty reasoning: When the Sun flares up into a red giant star, it’ll swallow the Earth, or at least burn it to a cinder.

Why any of that is funny, I’ll leave for some other commenter.

  2. This strip doesn’t produce a chuckle so much as a sigh of relief. If Johnny Hart had written it, instead of “the planet“, it would have said “humanity“.
P.S. @ Arthur – There are people who think that stupidity is automatically funny. That’s why “Funniest Home Videos” are shown on TV. The German versions of such shows are composed almost completely of retread American VHS material, frequently 15 to 25 years old.

  3. I think the character has just become a nihilist, realizing nothing ultimately matters.

Perhaps the writer is thinking that you’ll laugh because it’s true?

  4. Funniest Home Videos don’t just showcase stupidity, but also people getting hurt (or almost). So it’s funny based on Mel Brooks’s definition: Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.

  5. America’s Funniest Home Videos shows as many videos of babies and dogs as they do adults being stupid these days, and the baby and dog videos ALWAYS win.

  6. I saw an interview with an AFHV producer years ago. He said you wouldn’t believe some the one that they reject. People and animals getting seriously injured, for example.

  7. @ Brian – German TV standards are very strict about that issue. Both for the home videos, as well as for the (much more interesting) clips in Eurosport’s “WATTS” show, the (extremely) dependable rule is “whenever they show an accident, the victim was able to walk away from it, with no serious injuries“.
