A Moment of Truth

billr sends this in: “Looks like the clock is at 12:25, although maybe it’s 5:00. That doesn’t mean anything to me either way.”

If it’s 5:00 p.m., that’s an iconic end to the 9 to 5 workday. But while you may do a certain amount of lying while working in corporate America [“Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line and a representative will be with you shortly.” or “You’re the first customer who’s ever complained about that.”] after 5 you’re off the clock.

The exact time on the wall doesn’t matter. The comic is just re-interpreting “moment of truth” to mean “designated time when we temporarily stop lying”.

I think the lie is “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere”. It may be 4:59, 5:59, or even 8:59 in different time zones, but not specifically 5:00.

Powers has it. “Moment of truth” is an English language idiom meaning a critical or decisive time when someone or something is put to an ultimate test, and an outcome or reality is revealed.

The cartoonist has made the expression literal. There is a moment of truth, when we tell the truth. All other times are “moments of lies.”
