Well, there is the ol trope about chicks digging guitar players, so maybe the Cute Chick heard the twang as a a guitar chord?

But BC calls it out as a specific chord, not just any guitar chord. I tried to tie it to the “sacred chord” from “Hallelujah”, but the lyrics don’t support that specificity.

Eric Satie’s Gymnopedie number 1 opens by alternating a G major seventh chord with a D major seventh chord. If that helps. Which it doesn’t.

Chemgal, the same thought crossed my mind. It doesn’t exactly make sense, as Philip and Boise Ed observe, but I could see how an artist under a deadline might think it makes enough sense (it does not).

I guess you could play a chord on one string if you could hold a point partway along it rigidly, so the two segments vibrate at different frequencies. Which he couldn’t, of course.

@ Atanwat — I read the Wikipedia on major seventh chords and tried to make sense of how chords are named. Much, much more difficult than math is. How is it that musicians can understand chords, but not calculus?

@target4cactus: every time I try to delve into music theory — and I am honestly trying to understand it! — I come away feeling like they’re making the whole thing up as they go, like Kirk explaining the rules of fizzbin. But then others act like what has been explained actually made sense and was self-consistent, so actually the whole exercise feels like I’m on the outside while everyone else is doing Mornington Crescent from I’m sorry I haven’t a Clue…

larK, you remind me of when I was an undergraduate taking music theory because I wanted to, which totally baffled all the music majors who HAD to take it and hated it.

Meanwhile, I still rue the day that someone invented the concept of transposing instruments.
