Goldfish, of course, are reputed to have memories of only seconds.
The umpire fish has forgotten the count by the time of the next pitch.

Urban Variable is probably right. But I wonder if they’re all dreading when someone hits the ball, and shatters the glass. They all look worried.

The bit about goldfish memory isn’t even correct. From Live Science:
In reality, goldfish (Carassius auratus) have much longer memories — spanning weeks, months and even years, Brown* said. And the science to back this up has been around for more than 60 years.
