Deep appreciation to those who gave it all and to their families who, subsequently, did without them.
Not many in my ken: my mother-in-law’s cousin died as a pilot in WWII, while my grandmother had a brother who fell in the famed “Flanders Field” and has his name on a stone marker there. He, a Bavarian, was on the German side, not that he could do anything about that….
I also have very few KIAs in my family tree. My grandfather had an uncle who died in WWI (though Grandpa was only a year old at the time). Other than that, both grandfathers and their brothers all survived WWII, and none of their sons served in Vietnam.
Until Covid hit husband and I would spend Memorial Day (weekend) in Washington, DC. It always seemed so appropriate to visit and go to the assorted memorials in same. We were there for the first of these Memorial Days shows they did until Covid.
I remember one year we were stopped by a reporter who was asking people about being in same for the holiday and what they did. He seemed terribly disappointed that our reply was all Memorial Day related and how we come there for the holiday to remember those who have died in service for our country.
We would go annually to the Memorial Day Concert at night at the Capitol. We would get there very early and always sat at the front of the crowd. Since Covid we watch it on TV. From what we can see where we used to sit (on the ground) is no longer available for sitting and the set up seating, which was behind where we would sit now starts closer to the show. There is also a structure now as part of where they do the show which was not there back then.
