Chemgal sends this in: “Having not read the book nor seen the movie, this is a CIDU for me.”

The Wiki on the movie says Janis got off easy.
I read a review some time ago which noted that the best books about long-term trail hikes (Cheryl Strayed’s Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods on the AT among those noted) were written by people who didn’t actually complete the trails.
Another bit of trivia: Bryson hiked in 1996, and the book was published in 1998; Strayed hiked in 1995, but the book wasn’t published until 2012. Bryson was a proven writer at the time; Strayed was much less known.
Both books are great. The movie of Wild is much, much better than the movie of A Walk in the Woods, IMHO.
