Bob Ball sends this in: “Maybe cats in the 12/8 CIDU could have explained it.”
Is there a backstory to these characters that explains the joke?

Sometimes you get up in the morning and just feel the need to draw a close-up of a cartoon bat face. Really I have no idea. Maybe making a bid to take over Mark Trail?
I should point out that the blog’s tag for BC is outdated – Johnny Hart is long dead. The Mastroiannis (his sons and granddaughter) drive the strip now.
The first panel shows a bat doing the stereotypical cute animal face. So maybe this is the best day because they “are just so darn cute!”
Yep, the “sky puppy” view of bats.
Yes, Johnny Hart is long dead. But the author listing in GoComics still lists him as the author. https://www.gocomics.com/bc
So, if that’s what the syndicate says, that’s what I’ll use.
I’ve got bats in the barn, and I can tell you that bat guano is pretty terrible stuff. Other than that, though, bats eat mosquitos and other nasty flying things, so on the whole it’s not all that bad to have bats in your belfry, as long as you hang plastic sheets to catch the guano.
zbicyclist: Fair enough. I’d guess if the syndicate is crediting it that way, it’s the family’s preference. None of my business either way – I just thought the tag had been overlooked.
