As these first two strips show, Charlie Brown’s shirt had already become an icon just six months after Peanuts began syndication, and Schulz created a number of gags on the topic.

There is danger in innovation:

Nevertheless, the rewards can be satisfying:

Do clothes make the man?

Mark Parisi frequently uses Peanuts characters in “Off the Mark“, and has produced a number of gags based on Charlie Brown’s shirt.

This one is directly from Parisi’s OtM website, because it predates the archive at GoComics:

Reworking the coloration produces an alternative gag:

As this screenshot from one of the TV specials shows, Schulz was well aware of Charlie Brown’s selection dilemma:

That Sunday page is a longtime personal favorite. Besides being funny, it’s kinda deep. Charlie Brown knows what people think of him, and here he says so. He also takes the opportunity to call Lucy a blockhead, which I doubt he ever did anywhere else. And is Lucy sighing because he turned her joke back on her, or because for a moment she grasps what it’s like to be Charlie Brown? Also like the escalation of the girls laughing, ending with them rolling on the ground.
Occasionally Charlie Brown got the upper hand.
I rather like the last one, with the same design and multiple color options.
Boise Ed – My closet is like that – I have a row of identical tee shirts hanging in the closet sorted by color – no black stripes on them though.
(Some days I pick a color because I feel like it – other days I stick my hand in at random and select a shirt.)
I also have a row of tees, from the six-pack of Fruit of the Loom shirts. I have mine ordered by color, and I use them in strict rotation. This being Tuesday, I have on the navy blue.
Brian – :-)
Today I have the light blue tee shirt which is made of lighter and smoother fabric than the others – feels so much nicer – on today.
Mine are also ordered by color – color groups and from light color to dark color within each color.
When a tee shirt develops holes it becomes a pj top to sleep in. Same with my jeans – when the get holes in the knees they become pj bottoms.
The other day we had a problem with our car and we left a message overnight at our mechanic that we needed them to come and jump the car (as it would not start) and take and fix it. Unsure if they would ring the doorbell I slept in tee shirt and jeans without holes so if I had to get out of bed and run to the door I would not be wearing crappy clothing. (Mechanic is 3 blocks from our house.)
I also have fancier tee shirt blouses and a handful of long sleeve tee shirts when I am cold – but not cold enough to put a sweatshirt on over the tee.
I usually buy my tee shirts at major craft stores when they have a sale.
